Glamorganshire / Re: Newspaper article/police court research

Ah! This is brilliant thank you!
I have just done a quick search with the name (I'm not 100% sure I searched the right fields) but nothing appears with her name. I'll get in touch and see if anything does exist as it may answer a lot of questions. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction, much appreciated! :)

Glamorganshire / Newspaper article/police court research
« on: Wednesday 12 August 20 17:46 BST (UK)  »

I have came across a newspaper article about a woman who matches by name, age and place to my great grandmother. It concerns an 'affiliation summons' whereby she took a man to the police court because she alleged he was the father of her child (there is a family rumour of child in the past/census info matches etc so it seems this could well be her reported about). It gives the address and occupation details of the man she alleged was the father but nothing other than the full name of the woman who summoned him to the court.

I'm just wondering if there is anyway I can look into this further, would there be court records or some type of document about it. It was at Cardiff Police Court in 1900. Only I would really like to confirm things or at least look into it more to see if my suspicions about it all are possible or way off.

If anyone has any experience with this type of thing or knows where's best to start I'd love to know! Or sadly perhaps records were not kept but things reported locally in papers because of the scandal! Any advice welcome. Thank you

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Somewhere in Birmingham?
« on: Tuesday 30 June 20 14:05 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the replies! Reallt appreacite everyone's help. Now you've mentioned I can see it c written as Staffordshire!

It was recorded in Wales, many years later on a census at the time, so would make sense there was perhaps an error somewhere. After much tracing through other censuses there seems to be some confusion over where exactly he was born. There has been Birmingham, Warwickshire and Staffordshire given. I'll keep on trying to get things clearer as I'd like to find the birth certificate.

Thanks again everyone

The Common Room / Re: Surnames on Certificates
« on: Wednesday 10 June 20 17:49 BST (UK)  »
Ahhh okay. Makes sense!

There are vague mentions of her being married before but very vague (eveyone whow would know is no longer alive to ask) so I would like to search the previous marriage. So if I start with the "Late" name and have a search that could offer some lines to follow.

Thanks so much for the help!

The Common Room / Surnames on Certificates
« on: Wednesday 10 June 20 17:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

This may be quite obvious but I haven't had it come up before so wanted to check see if what I assumed was right.

On a birth certificate I have the Mother's current surname along with "late" and "formerly" surnames.

Am I right to assume the "formerly" relates to original surname and the "late" is one that is from either divorce or widowed?

Many thanks

Hi,
I am just wondering if it's possible to get two very badly damaged photo's restored? I would happily post them on here but it's a bit difficult as it's part of a Christmas Present i'm making and there is a chance the person I'm doing it for may see on here as it's a family member and I have showed them how to use this site (luckily they don't know my username either so posting this should be fine!). A bit odd I know but I don't want them to see the photo's at all yet. If anyone is willing to help I can email a scan of them for you to see if there is anything you can do with them.
Thanks!

Armed Forces / Uniform identification?
« on: Tuesday 20 November 12 17:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone tell me anything from the photo's of the uniform below? I'm clueless about it other than the fact the photo was taken around 1919/1920ish.
Thanks

The Certificate states her Father as Late Joseph Melling Occupation Shoe maker, can I take this info any further somehow?
