Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Northamptonshire Birth: John SOUTH
« on: Sunday 15 January 17 22:32 GMT (UK)  »
The death record of my ancestor John SOUTH on June 7 1853 gives his birthplace as Nipcott, Warwickshire, age 76.

I can't find any trace of a "Nipcott" in Warwickshire. However, it's possible that this is meant to be Knightcote, a village in Burton Dassett parish in Warwickshire, not far from the Northants border.

There's a Phoebe South, daughter of John & Mary South, born in Burton Dasset in 1805. [2] A Phoebe South married George Turvey in Helmdon [1]

Norfolk / Re: Surname Turvey

The surname Turvey has been found in East Anglia at least as far back as 1395 when there was a Norfolk priest called John Turvey:

http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Surname:Turvey#Earliest_recorded_Turveys

It appears that the main "line" originated from the Bedfordshire village of Turvey in the 1200s. There was a smattering of Turveys in East Anglia in the 1841 census.

I doubt if the Turveys were German origin, although a maternal line may well have been of course. I haven't found any Turvey ancestries in East Anglia going back before 1760 I'm afraid.

Incidentally, have any of your male Turvey relatives had their Y DNA tested? It would be exciting if they were a match to me, as our lines would have probably diverged about 700 years ago.

Perthshire / Re: MacNaughton/McNaughton of Comrie (Finglen)

Hi everyone,

I am searching for information on my MacNaughton/McNaughton ancestors in the Comrie area....

I also have McNaughton family from Comrie although a bit later on: Janet McNaughton, born Comrie in around 1842 per the 1881 census. She married David Tulloch in Edinburgh in 1861:

Looking at the 1851 census, there were three Janet McNaughtons in Comrie - born in Aberuchill, Ross and Dalhonzie, all three areas of Comrie parish. Not sure at this stage which one is my ancestor and I can't locate the OPR.

Orkney / Re: William Baikie Scarth

Azurewood,
Is Robert Scarth, the 19th C Kirkwall solicitor, who was factor of the Traill Estates on Rousay, when the infamous Rousay Clearances took place, related to this family?

Spittalhall, the Robert Scarth you're speaking of is my Great Great Grandfather.

Robert wasn't a solicitor; he was an agent of the Union Bank, a factor and a landowner.

Robert was the factor for the Laing family and also the Traills of Woodwick between 1852 and 1873.  I understood that the main clearances on Rousay were in the 1820s (before Robert was factor) and again later under General Burroughs after Robert had retired.

I have not managed to link William Baikie Scarth's ancestor into the Binscarth Scarths but given that Orkney is relatively small it is probable that he does link in somewhere.

Hi Hevsih,

This entry on rootsweb suggests that your Robert Scarth was indeed responsible for the Rousay clearances:

North Ronaldsay parish records only go back to the mid 1700s, although there is a list of heads of households dating to the 1690s if that helps (Orkney Poll Taxes of the 1690s, James Irvine)

Tullochs made up around a third of the population of North Ronaldsay, so there were quite a few of them there. Thomson was the surname of the island Baillie (the landlord's representative) so again there are quite a few of them.

Some examples I have found:

http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Family:Isaac_Thomson_and_Elizabeth_Tulloch_%281%29

Is this any help?
