Oh yes, I know the feeling:

1. On one of the census returns, the family is Hemsley on one page and on the next it's Elmsley...yet they were the children so not sure what that census returner was thinking. I thought they would be the literate ones!

2. My great grandmother in Ireland was married twice. Apparently the census guy turned up in 1891, asked "name". She said 'McAllister' (her new name) and that she had 4 children. So my grandfather's name was put down as McAllister and that's what I'd be called if he had been any younger. Thankfully he was a teenager and knew to correct it 10 years later. Now THAT would have been a long, wrong path to follow if I hadn't have found that out!

I'll let you know what Brighton reveals!

Omega and Annette: You're definitely on my Christmas card list!

I've got more info and leads in the past three days than I have previously had in the last three months.

Don't know how to thank you but THANK YOU. I'm going to be busy down the Brighton reference library next week!

:D

Hi Omega

I've tracked Richard in the Brighton census' from 1841 to 1871 with his first wife Emma and then 1881-91 with second wife Elizabeth. I'm tending to go with Annette's idea that the Richard married to Lucy Page isn't the one I'm looking for.

P.S. Having just read a few lines from an account of the London poor and in particular the drunken life of coalporters and associated trades, you could well be right about the humourous reference to wine!

Annette, I absolutely agree with your weald findings (although very nice to have someone else concur!). However, I'll definitely look up the death records in Lewes as that might give some further info, so thank you for that.

I wish I'd joined rootschat earlier: what a wealth of knowledge and it's very kind for (all of) you to be letting me know.

:D

You are correct on all counts.

However, Richard got married a second time (to Elizabeth in 1877) and hence there was a marriage certificate, citing the wine vaults reference and that George was deceased. Which would fit in with the 1861 death in Lewes...although HIS death cert said Coal Porter. Which is where I started this whole thread from!!!

That Preston birth on familysearch is tantalising, Annette: I think another trip to the Brighton archives is called for.

Also, the children seem to match but according to theweald.org, George was born in Buxted and died in Fletching. Methinks  two different George
(H)Emsleys have been merged...or I'm following the wrong one!

Appreciate the lead. P  :D

Y'know what? I never considered George's wife! It's a v. common name unfortunately but I'll check it out. I did look for Sarah but perhaps not thoroughly enough. Sometimes you can't see the wood for the (family) trees.

Thanks for the focus. P :)
