South Africa / Children's Homes in Grahamstown
« on: Friday 08 March 24 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Good day.  I am looking for anyone who has a connection with children who were in Woodville, Queen Alexandra or St. Michael's homes in Grahamstown.

Many thanks

In 1948 he was living in Durban and baptized a child at St Thomas, Verulam.  Think that the next baptism was possibly a child born to his brother.

England / Children's Overseas Reception Board

Between July and September 1940 children from various areas were sent overseas for safety. Amongst these were 353 children sent to South Africa.  I have managed to find the names of 345 who sailed on the SS Llanstephan.

It is believed that not all of the children returned to England, but rather stayed behind to start a new life in South Africa.

Would love to know whether anyone had a relative who came out with CORB but then chose to remain in South Africa.
Many thanks.

Who was the informant on the death notice?  If it was a family member, possibly they took them to be placed in a Wall of Remembrance.  Have you looked for a plaque for your relative? If you find one, possibly the cemetery would have a record of who paid to have it erected.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Name of the bride

It looks like Silens Faith to me. There is a small upright between the tall strokes that have been taken as a capital H.

I also think so, but was worried that it was just wishful thinking on my part, so needed some expert opinion.

Many thanks

There is an index (no image) of a child, Mathew Maw, being baptised, with parents Mathew and Hencefaith in 1712.

Perhaps this is a different Mathew Maw getting married? What year is your image from?

Sorry - I was really not thinking straight.  I should have said mother of Matthew Jnr, not the bride.  The image is one that I got directly from FS showing the baptism of Jnr.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Name of the bride

I would really appreciate some assistance with this. Matthew Maw married on 29 October, and his bride has been transcribed as Hencefaith.

In all the records of the baptism of his children the mother (his wife) is clearly recorded as Silence.  Could someone with experience in old handwriting please confirm her name.

Many thanks

Had another look and I think it is the one for the 24 October, not the 6th from the bottom.

Likewise, I like to see 'the piece of paper' !

Please post what you find.

I received a really quick response from familysearch. I think the entry is the 6th one from the bottom. Not much help I am afraid.
