US Lookup Requests / Re: Violet Mary Jackson birth 27.09.1903
« on: Tuesday 16 January 24 17:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi both.  Yes Violet is on 1905 NY census - Joseph 30 / Ellen 27 / Nellie 3 and Violet 1.

1911 census is for  Coventry Warwickshire England.   Violet's birth stated as Brooklyn, NY with a comment which says British Subject by parentage.

Thanks. Sue

US Lookup Requests / Violet Mary Jackson birth 27.09.1903
« on: Tuesday 16 January 24 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find a birth record (or baptism) for a Violet Mary Jackson on 27.09.1903  in Brooklyn, NY city.
Her parents Joseph Jackson and Elle (Nellie) nee Lalley travelled from the UK after 6.4.1902 (her sisters birth in UK) and returned before the UK 1911 census.  Living as per the  1905 census from NY (16th Electoral District, Block C, 30th Assembly District, Borough of Brooklyn, County of Kings. NY. He is a machinist, she a housewife.  He could be working for a company called E.W. Bliss and Co. of Brooklyn, New York who produced torpedoes for the US Navy.

Another relative wonders if she was adopted by them in NY - have no evidence of this so finding a record of birth would help to solve this mystery.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.  Regards Sue

Hello - yes you have found the correct marriage. The Rose on the 1939 census is Louise's sister.  I store my research on Ancestry but as you mention if I looked at your research I can then help you fill in some gaps on the Haldanes. Some bits are tricky because of the Scottish connection.  My email address is suejongarside@gmail.com Look forward to hearing from you.  Regards Sue

Hello - my friend is the 93 year old daughter of John Laven Haldane, brother to Rose.  When I began research for her she gave me the bare bones of the family tree which I have built on.  She knew some dates/names/places from her earlier life but as many of the family had lost touch with each other she had no idea where they all went/when they died etc.   She is a neighbour (we live in Somerset) and usually I will go and visit her several times in the week.  At the moment though my main contact is by phone and an occasional face to face at a distance. To begin with I will need to talk to her, explain your connection and refresh her memory with names and dates.  If you have any specific questions you would like me to ask her then feel free to say.  I may even have some answers in the research I have already done.  Looking forward to hearing from you.  Regards Sue

South Africa / Re: Samuel Haywood - Johannesburg Police

Hello - thank you so much for this.  I have been searching for them for ages - just by chance came across the attestation paper which led me to SA.  Also found Jane's death in SA. Just need to try to find out what happened to Edward now. He was born Edward C Dunning in 1894 in Ohio to Jane's sister.  She sadly died and Edward and one of his siblings were brought back to England - one remained in the States.  Their father then sadly died just a couple of years later. Edward was ''adopted'' by Jane and Samuel and his sister by another of Jane's sisters.  Still called Dunning on 1901 census but don't know if he changed his name to Haywood at all - is it possible to see if he went with Jane to SA and what happened after that?  I will keep searching but am grateful for any help.  Regards Sue

Hello Sue - haven't been on Roots for some time and just came across your reply to my post about the Haldane family.  My friend if very much still alive and so it would be good to find out more about your grandparents so I can pass this on to her.  Once again apologies for not picking up your message sooner but hope we can connect now. Regards Sue

South Africa / Samuel Haywood - Johannesburg Police
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 11:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello - would be grateful if anyone could help me find more info. about my relative Samuel Haywood.  He was born in Preston, Lancashire in 1862 and married my great aunt Jane Steadman.  He served in the 15th Hussars and as a Policeman in England.  Have found his attestation papers for 1900 when he signs up for the 66th Coy Imperial Yeomanry and is posted to SA.   His papers state he was discharged at his own request on 27.3.1901 but a note just before that says To Police Pte 1.2.01.  It also states his intended place of residence as Johannesburg Police.  I can find no record of him, his wife Jane or their adopted son Edward C Dunning (Jane's sister's child) after this so would love to find out if he/they moved to SA permanently.  Thank you for reading this - any help would be appreciated.  Regards Sue

Hello Melanee - I began this post some time ago now.  I haven't done any research on this tree for a while though.  As I mentioned Emily Garside was the sister of my husband's great grandfather.  I have done a lot of research on the Garside's so please feel free to ask me questions about them.  Bear with me though whilst I go back to the tree and reacquaint myself with the information.  Best wishes Sue
