Census and Resource Discussion / Re: FTM 2012 and Ancestry

Hi
Yes, you do need to have a current subscription to Ancestry otherwise people would just buy FTM software & Ancestry would lose income.  :)

The Common Room / Heir Hunters
« on: Friday 05 October 12 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

A friend has asked me to help him find a Heir Hunter firm as he has been appointed as the Administrator for a relative who has died Intestate.
Can anyone tell me the best way of finding a reputable company to help him?

Regards
Shirley

Glamorganshire / Re: Marriage Look up 1920's
« on: Friday 22 June 12 13:34 BST (UK)  »
Thought you would be pleased to know that it does appear to be the 1933 marriage of Joachim MENDES & Sarah Maud DAVIES nee EDWARDS.

Have sent our friend Joachim's merchant navy papers which has his photograph on it!!!!!
Our friend is extremely pleased & she can see the family resemblance to Joachim's grandson!!!
Joachim stayed around in Cardiff but I don't know if they were living together when he died in 1956.
Joachim & Sarah Maud were both widowed before their 1933 wedding which would explain them marrying so long after their child was born.

The Common Room / Re: Why no mother's name on birth certificate?
« on: Saturday 08 October 11 22:35 BST (UK)  »
I hadn't started doing the family tree when my mother discovered this - my dad was just coming up to pension age & the government needed Mum's birth cert!!
If she hadn't asked her cousin to get it for her (we live a different county), Mum would have been asking for it in the wrong surname & the wrong parents!

Nothing can ever be as big a shock as that was for many reasons but it taught me to be wary of things that family members tell me because I know how huge family secrets can be.

Perhaps a phone call to the local Register Office where your friend's birth was registered may shed some light on this matter.

When my late mother needed her birth certificate for the first time (aged 62), her cousin went to the relevant Register Office for her & the Registrar not only provided the certificate but very kindly photocopied the entry in the Register which contained a notation with some personal information.
Mum's cousin knew my mother had been brought up by her aunt after my grandmother died just after giving birth & mum's father didn't wish to be "saddled with a baby" so Mum would never have found her birth cert if her cousin been in on the "big secret". The cousin explained this to the Registrar which is why they were so helpful. It was a huge shock to my poor mother!!!

I'm sure the local Superintendant Registrar would check the entry for your friend to see if any more info is contained there.

Shirley

The Lighter Side / WDYTYA DVDs
« on: Wednesday 05 October 11 23:13 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone has bought the DVDs for the last series of Who Do You Think You Are?

Can you tell me if the programmes featured on the DVD are exactly as shown on BBC-1 or if there is any unseen footage as "extras"?

Many thanks.

Hi Susan

Thank you so much for your time & effort - you are a star!!!
This ties up this loose end in my research & leads me now to the second marriage of Nathaniel EDDLESTON.

Many thanks,

Hi David

Thank you so much for your very helpful reply.
I am indeed tracing the EDDLESTON line and I have found Henry as a Widower  in Co Durham working as a Navvy in the 1871 census so things are fitting into place with your information.
He seems to have got remarried in 1876  to a lady called Elizabeth Ann PEACOCK from Co Durham. In 1881 he is still a Navvy in Co Durham and a bit of work is needed to trace what happened to them after that.
Knowing details about Mary KEMPSON is extremely useful and hopefully the marriage details will confirm Henry's occupation.
Many thanks
Best regards,
Shirley

I would be extremely grateful if some kind soul would do a look up for the marriage of Nathaniel EDDLESTON & Mary LITCHFIELD on 4th November 1866 at Houghton Conquest.
I would love to know the details in the marriage register.
Sincere thanks
Shirley
