Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: Pelynt Baptisms - John JAGO 1805
« on: Friday 04 December 15 04:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, thanks for the post!

I have not got any further with this unfortunately! Ive put these Cornish people aside for now, (hoping for more info to surface in a future date... :o ...as is often the case!

Ive been working on another twig of the same tree... a Mary BOND (1828-1925) who hails from St Dominick's parish, Ashton, near Callington, Cornwall, and her husband, Rev. John Thomas PITHOUSE (1836-1926) (not Cornish, but I forgive him as he had the sense to marry a Cornish lass!) Both died in Portland, Victoria, though 2 of their sons populated Tassie with more PITHOUSES!.

Happy to share what I have but probably not on this forum as we are drifting away from the Topic...
gene2bearATgmailDOTcom will find me...

Best wishes
Gene

Dear Jane,
So pleased to hear from you, and I am MOST interested in some collaboration on theses Jacksons!
However at present I'm travelling in Europe and don't have all my 'stuff' with me, so I will get back in touch as soon as I get home in a month or so time!
As we will have lots to trade, (says she hopefully!), perhaps we could do it via email?
I'm at gene2bearATgmailDOTcom
Looking forward to chatting
Best wishes

What a great lot of people you all are! Thanks so much!
I think the last line refers to the stonemason himself - he was Austin Carley, brother of the Peter mentioned. So I think the last line is:
1884 A CARLEY GEELONG
Best wishes to all

Thanks so much for moving the post, Sarah!!

And thanks to all the brave hearts who made an effort for me! No wonder I had little luck with online dictionaries if Austin the mason has spelled it phonetically!!

What a nice thing for Austin to add to the memorial, and in the 'old country' language.

Very proud to have these people in my ancestry!

Thanks all,

Gene

Hi there,

I have finally tracked down my Co Clare ancestors' burial site in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, and am amazed at the intricate plaque on it.

It was most likely manufactured by Austin CARLEY, a stonemason in the Geelong area and the brother of the deceased Peter CARLEY.

Can anyone help out here? I suspect it's in Gaelic, and have been unable to get far with translating, though I suspect PHADER AGUS MHARGIE C means Peter and Margaret C (AGUS does mean AND!)

It would appear to contain a prayer that ends in AMEN, but  And the last line of course says 'AD 1884 A CARLEY GEELONG’

Here's a transcription of the full headstone (which is written in English), and I'll attach a picture of the Gaelic plaque

Thanks Kath,
That's what I came up with too!!
But I thought I'd see if anyone had a better idea!
He was a stone mason, so possibly dust related...
Great minds think alike, eh??  :D

Greetings!
I have a Death Certificate for one John POAD, died 12 Dec 1843 at St Dominick, Cornwall. He was 72 years old and a Mason, but his cause of death has me flummoxed!
And I quote, exactly as written: 'Callis on the Inside'
Dr Google has not come up with any satisfactory answers, so over to you wonderful RootsChat.Com members!!
