Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: Grandma Lookup please

Hi Dizzifish.  Thank you so much for looking into this for me as no-one in the family could trace her.  I can't wait to tell them all.  At long last we are now able to put a past to my father, a ghost can be laid to rest and many cousins can now be found. I'm looking forward to seeing how far back I can go with the help of the information you have supplied me.  Thank you.  :)

Hi Dizzifish.   So this would explain why Ernest was called Lindley as he was born before her wedding to Edwin, she may not even have known him then,  and possibly at that time she could not afford to keep him.  Her other children were born in wedlock hence their surnames.  But why would Hannah Metcalf, who was also single, adopt him?

Thanks for that Dizzifish.  It is most interesting.  I checked The Genealogist website and in 1895 45 Bridge Street was being lived in by two men.  One of the names I recognise but I cannot remember where from and the other is the one you named.  It is strange that I cannot find more information on Ada herself.  I checked the same website for any Ada Lindley living in Nottingham in 1891 and I get three, yet when I check My Ancestors more come up.  This one is really doing my head in now.   :'( Surely it cannot be so difficult to find a relative from a century ago when I've managed to get all other lines of my family back to the 1600's??  ???  I've even gone so far as to trawl through all the Census Returns for 1891 for both Carlton and Basford and still no joy.  The only other thing I can think of is that maybe she married.  I found an Ada who married a Lindley and she died in the early 1900's which would tie in but from memory I don't think she lived in the Nottingham area at any time of her short life.

Hi Doran54.  I don't know if she was married or not as on her sons birth certificate there is no fathers name.  I presume by this it means she was unmarried.

Hi Carol8353.  It was suggested that Ernest William was found on the doorstep of someones house and that the name Topping had something to do with it.  Hannah later went on to marry someone by this name.

Hi Rosie99.  If my memory serves me well, I did look at this name and found a Family Tree for her but there was no one called Ernest William anywhere to be seen.

Hi.  I live in Leyland, Lancashire and whilst most of my research I am able to do myself, I am stuck on one aspect in particular and was wondering if anyone could help?

I am trying to locate some information on Ada Lindley who is my grandmother.  No one in the family seems to know much about her.  We know she was the mother of my father Ernest William Lindley who was born at 45 Bridge Street, Langley Mill on the 4th August 1895 to one Ada Lindley who was a Domestic Servant.  How old she was and where she came from no one knows and that is what I am trying to find out.

The only information I have, apart from the above, is in 1895 she was alleged to be living in New Row, Carlton, Nottinghamshire.  No house number is known I'm afraid.  I've checked the 1891 and the 1901 Census but I couldn't see her anywhere.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Warmest Regards

Sharon

Everytime Ernest William was asked who it was he always said she was called Ada and Ada Lindley is down on his birth certificate.  Would it be plausible to assume that Ada had a child to one of Hannahs children and as they were rich she thought the child would be better off with him but when he married he didn't want him?  I know it's a long shot but would it be plausible?

No I've not looked at them indepth as I didn't know that part.  I know that Hannah was previously married and had some children with him.  I'll take another look at them now I know.

Thank you for your help.

Yes those are the details I have.  It's Ada's details I'm looking for.

Hi. I'm looking for the mother of my grandad.  My mum told me her father was found on a doorstep and wanted to know the circumstances behind it.  I also need to knew who my granddads mother was and where she came from.

I was given a few names from the past she remember, like he was born in Langley Mill, Nottingham.  He was adopted by a Mr & Mrs Topping and there was a picture on the wall when she was growing up of someone called Ada.  Some of her brothers said she was an aunt and some said she was a grandma but none knew for sure.

I started by sending away for his birth certificate.  The name Ada was there under Maiden name of mother.  That was the easy bit.  The Ada in the photo was my mothers grandma.  I then found a Mr & Mrs Topping in the Census and after a little investigation found that Mrs Topping had adopted a young buy of about 5 years old when she was single.  She then went on to marry a Mr Topping.  Mr Topping had put his name down as Father on my grandads marriage certificate.  No matter how hard a tried I could not find out where Ada had come from though.  Was she born in Nottingham where my grandad had lived during his life or was she from somewhere else?

The information I have from the birth certificate is as follows:

Name & where born - Ernest William Lindley / Fourth August 1895, 45 Bridge Street, Langley Mill.
Name and Profession of mother - Ada Lindley / Domestic Servant.
Signature, description & residence of Informant - Ada Lindley / New Row, Carlton, Nottingham, as per declaration dated 2nd September 1895.
When Registered - Third September 1895.
The Certificate has Registration District - Basford, 1895 Birth in the Sub District of Ilkeston, in the Counties of Derby & Nottingham at the top of the certificate.

Any help on who the mother was and came from would be gratefully received as I'm running out of ideas.
