Devon / Re: Frederick Thomas W. MAJOR (b. 1891) Mystery!
« on: Wednesday 25 September 13 17:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I realise this is a rather old post, but in case you are still researching, Frederick Thomas W Major (b. 1891, Exeter) was the son of William Henry Major (b. 26 Feb 1871 in Exeter Workhouse, Exeter, Devon) and Mary Owen (b. 1868 in Cullompton, Devon).
Frederick Thomas Melhuish was my 1st cousin 3xremoved and he married Mary Ann Major in 1881. Neither William Henry Major or Emma Major were his children (although they both have the surname Melhuish in the 1881 census).  Emma Major married William George Mudge in Exeter in 1894.

Jacqui or anyone; any thoughts of dates of death for John Croken James and Eliza Young?
It seems his death was after 1881, but I've not been able to pinpoint a reliable death for him or her.

Jacqui, have you had any luck finding Alexander William Kendra in 1841 census?
And have just realised his widow married William Young. D'oh! Don't know how I didn't notice this before.

I had a look at this.  Not too sure to be honest, and a bit dubious about the Shoreditch connection - I have seen workhouses and such places list everyone with the same place of birth, even when they are not from the same place though.

Hi Jacqui
Yes, this must make us 1st cousins, several times removed - nice to meet you!  :)
I was bemused too by the Perkins middle name - could make no sense of it at all.
I have Katherine on my tree - I couldn't find a reliable death for her though - can you please confirm where and when she died? I have her marrying John Walls and Harry Wakefield.

I realise this is an old thread, but hello to the original poster.  I Googled John Crocken James today and was interested to find this forum post.    He was my 3rd great grandfather.  His daughter Sarah Jane James was my 2nd great grandmother.  All the information you've posted about him pretty much mirrors what I have discovered and I have come up against the same brick wall as yourself in Eliza Young.  I had not comes across before though the Bushey baptism or the birth of Robert Croken Kendra.

Like yourself, I was intrigued by the middle name of Crocken as it crops up a few times in the family and I assumed it must relate to some maiden name of a female relative, but I've not been able to verify the relevance of the name.  I'd be interested to know how you're related to John Croken James, as we must be related in some way.

Regards
