Yorkshire (West Riding) / Hugh Gill Chemist 7 Old Market Halifax 1841-1843 ?
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 18:49 BST (UK)  »
Just for anyone researching this family i thought i would put up this Very rare survivor,

Hugh Gill chemist 7 old market Halifax, i have not been able to find little about him but should date from the early 1840's
The Pharmaceutical society was founded in 1841 and became the ROYAL Pharmaceutical Society in 1843
so i am guessing this could be the date range for the bottle

hi all, i have imported this amazing and very large "Sunderland" luster jug from France, it has been in the same family for years and was used as a flower vase up until the day i found it, I collect this kind of local pottery with the images of Tynemouth on them. The family could find no reference to a Robin side to there family and had no north east connections.

They are very few and far between unlike the common ones with the bridges or sailing themes.

they are unmarked with the pottery which made them but have been pinned down to the Carr pottery North shields.

most i have in the collection are called death mugs which some have peoples names on them and the date in black (earliest i have so far is 1861)

this on the other hand is missing the "Death" poem and has Red/brown lettering making me think it could be a "Birth" jug what do you think could he be from North shields area and a sailor ?

the problem is the size it is way bigger than all but one i have ever see, this was in the carr family and was from there pottery show room and was made for advertising. a normal sailor would not have been allowed to take up so much space on board ship so how did it end up in france

And was he a local man ?

That is amazing top information and will add it to the book It is also interesting that August the 1st 1868 was the date when they were required to take there examination and be certified, and not long after he winds the concern up ?

Hi. I have in the past come across a Joseph Peacock Chemist and Druggist in Tyne Street, South Shields. I do not have any other information but it could be the same one.
 :)

could be a link there I have no records for that company at the moment in my references, do you have a start date for them ?

cheers

no JenB just ended in a dead end :( Probable but the bottle seems to date from the 1860's to 1880's so unlikely to be the same one :( unless the company name continued under son's ect

Hi all

i am writing a book on the chemists Druggist's & herbalists of the North east of England (for 10 years so far) and i have had no luck pinning this bottle and name down, pre 1868 they did not have to be registered as a druggist or chemist.

the first thing i am wanting a answer is this My Newcastle or another one Australia ?

the second is was he a chemist as the shape and style of the bottle imply's

Got a response from the UK rotary

Dear Emma

Thanks you for sending me the information received from Wayne Clynes.  As
far as I can see the information is about a past Rotary President from
Tasmania and as such would not be suitable for inclusion in the RIBI
Library.  I cannot see that Mr J B Watt referred to in the email was a
Rotary International President either so the information may not be of value
to Rotary International.  Most likely it could be of interest to Rotarians
in Tasmania, but unfortunately I do not have a contact and am not sure if
they have an archive.

The Rotary Global History Fellowship may be able to assist, its website is
http://www.historyfellowship.org/viewpage.php?page_id=1  and I suggest Mr
Clynes makes contact there.

Best regards

David
