Hello everyone and thank you for the information and advice.
Thanks hdw for the information on the Jedburgh Poor Law CD, that really confirmed a few things to make me pretty sure it’s the 2 people I’m looking for. The ages match and other things like in the 1861 census his occupation is ‘groom’ (though in other documents he tends to be stated as a ‘toll collector’). Also Margaret’s age is correct and she went into service and I found her as a servant in Edinburgh in the 1881 census. Her mother died in 1865 so that’s why the family may have broken up and they ended up in the workhouse.
Margaret had 3 older brothers – James b1851, George b1854 & Thomas b1856. Thomas may have ended up in a workhouse as well as he would have been only 12 when his mother died but then again they started working at a young age back then.
I will keep looking.
Thanks again
Jenny W
