Hi Tree Spirit,

"Would you like to have a stab at the Birthplace and Nationality of the Deceased?"  A stab in this sense means, would you like to have a go or an attempt to work out the Birthplace and Nationality.  It's a colloquialism from my homeland.

Thank you very much for your time, assistance and advice in helping me take a step further in solving this mystery.

Best regards.

Wendy

Hello Tree Spirit,

Thank you so very much for locating the death information of my 2nd Great Uncle.  Just goes to show you shouldn’t throw out random pieces of paper with scribble and dates!!!  This was my only clue and my grandmother was correct.

Would you like to have a stab at the Birthplace and Nationality of the Deceased?  It looks like:

       “Manchester - Union Matrenal“

It certainly doesn’t sound like somewhere in New Zealand or Australia.

This information you found for me is the ONLY concrete evidence I have found on the three siblings (well, the three that I know of!!)

Best regards.

South Africa / Thomas WATERWORTH - Death in Johannesburg
« on: Tuesday 15 October 19 00:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have recently found an old scratch piece of paper that belonged to my grandmother (Olive GOODALL, née MUNDAY) with what I hope are the details of her uncle’s death. Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm it via several on-line databases.

Would someone with more experience with South African research be able to verify and confirm his death for me?

Thomas WATERWORTH
b.   ?   New Zealand/Australia
m.  ?
d.   9 October 1955   Johannesburg, South Africa

I do not know when he left New Zealand/Australia or why he went to South Africa.

He had two sisters:
Agnes WATERWORTH born in Gore, New Zealand; and
Elizabeth “Eliza” Ann WATERWORTH possibly also born in New Zealand.

I believe he may have been single when he died and lived in a boarding house.  Perhaps my grandmother Olive GOODALL née MUNDAY was his next of kin?

Thank you for your assistance.

Armed Forces / Military in 1842
« on: Thursday 29 September 16 08:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My 2nd Great Grandfather - William Goodall - was a convict and in 1842 was sent to Van Diemen's Land (now known as Tasmania), Australia, from England to serve 10 years for burglary.

                William Goodall  (no middle name)
                Born:  1822  Yorkshire, England
                Christened:  1822  Riccall, Yorkshire, England
Sentenced:  27 June 1842  Southampton, Portsmouth  (20 years old)
Married:  1853  Brighton, Victoria, Australia  (21 years old)
Died:  1873  Melbourne, Victoria, Australia  (51 years old)

His transportation documents:

http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON14-1-17,298,203,L,80

According to the first link, he had several tattoos, i.e. a half moon, stars and an anchor, as well as others.
Also according to the first link, he was sentenced for burglary as well as drunkenness and stopping out of barracks.
According to the second link, he was in the 37th Regiment, 2 "Lrs"?
According to the first and second link, he was tried at Southampton, Portsmouth.

Questions:

1.   Was he in the navy (because he was in Southampton, a sea port, and had sailor-type tattoos) or in the army (because he was in a barrack and was in the 37th Regiment)?
2.   I've been told that if you were in the military and were sentenced for a crime your military records were destroyed - true?  (via an "expert" researcher)
3.   I've searched the UK Archives and have not been able to locate any records.  Would someone be able to provide pointers in navigating their web site?

Best regards.

Hello,

Would someone be able to do a marriage look-up for:

John Fitzgerald marrying Margaret O'Brien
They may have married in the Kilbeheny, Kilgass area of S.E. Limerick or in Bruff.

I believe their children were:
Mary, born approx. 1831
Maurice, born approx. 1833
Ellen, born approx. 1835

Best regards.

Limerick / Townland, Diocese or Poor Law Union?
« on: Sunday 08 February 15 19:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am writing a paper (due next week!!) on the Fitzgerald family from the Kilglass, Kilbehenny area and I'm totally confused.  Before I attempt to begin researching, I want to put together a cheat sheet so I can systematically begin my research.  Are you able to assist me?

Province:  Munster  (there are four in the country)

County:  Limerick  (there are 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland, 6 in Northern Ireland = 32 in total)

Barony:  Coshlea  (there are 14 baronies in the county)

Parish:  Kilbeheny  (how many parishes are there in Kilbeheny?)

What comes next a Townland, Diocese or Poor Law Union?  I am unable to find a map on-line.

Also a lovely lady once mentioned a free index on IFHF; I am unable to find it and wonder if it would be worth my while to subscribe for a week/month?

Best regards.
