Occupation Interests / Re: Stonemasons

Hi Jan,
Having many stonemason ancestors myself I've spent considerable time trying to come up with a source of guild information. So far haven't found anything. I do know however that it was very usual for stonemasons to follow the work, whether that be building bridges during the development of the rail networks or whatever. As one poster said the UK included England, 32 county Ireland, Scotland and Wales equally and I know of some stonemason ancestors who worked freely among them. There must have been a guild to cover all. I'll keep you posted if I do discover an organisation.

Thanks guys some great ideas there.

Conahy: you could well be right about the death not having been recorded or possibly mis-transcribed. Hadn't thought to check other spellings like Horan for example. Will do.

Weste: You're right, he may not have died where buried. I tried ordering a cert for a guy of the same name, year of death and age at death, but in Dingle instead... No joy there. I may try a couple more..

GrahamSimons: A twist that I hadn't thought of! But could be the case. Inscription didn't specify that he was buried there, just said "in memory of ....". I'll keep an open mind on finding another grave, although I wouldn't expect it to have a headstone given that this headstone exists... Not sure..

Does anyone know how complete the burial register is for St Otterans graveyard is?
Which of the Waterford CoCo library branches has it?

Good point Aghadowney. There's no clear indication when the headstone was erected unfortunately. He is the first person listed on the headstone though which means that it may have been erected soon after his death.

Waterford / Death 1864, but death certificate not found - any ideas?
« on: Tuesday 24 September 13 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Headstone of James Moran in Ballygunner says that he "died 14th September 1864, aged 80 years".
James lived in Waterford City.
Unfortunately I cannot locate a death certificate for James.
The nearest that I found was a death cert for James Moran, Waterford, age 86. This turned out to be a farmer from Mooncoin - not the James which I was looking for, all of whose children were baptised in Waterford City, and who only lived to 80'yrs.
I'd really appreciate any ideas as to why the death cert does not appear to be listed ?

Waterford / Re: D.P. Moran - Irish journalist, activist and cultural-political theorist

Thanks Vasaborg. Things have moved on a bit since that post. I'm now stuck on my great great great grandfather James Moan was the grandfather of D.P. Moran. It would have been good if someone had documented D.P. Morans ancestors as they're mine also. I've done a lot of research on D.P. But haven't found that information - only a mention of his father who I am aware of.

I'll open another post with the the title "Death 1864, but death certificate not found" to see if anyone has encountered a similar problem.

Thanks again

Waterford / Re: Graveyards in use in 19th Century Waterford City?

Very impressive Vasaborg!
Do you mid if I ask what the information source is? If it's a list that you have when was it recorded? The reason that I ask is because I'm thinking that it may have headstone inscriptions recorded before some of the headstones fell over or became unreadable..

Vasaborg,
Would it be fair to say that the 1821 census of Waterford is quite incomplete?
I've not been able to find many people in the 1821 census who I know were there at the time..

Thanks Vasaborg, Really appreciate the information.

Very interested in Holy Trinity Without , Ballybricken, and Saint Otteran's.
Do you know if burial registers exist for these?

Also, could you tell me where these graveyards are?

Wonderful to have this good information, thanks again
