New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Albert Williamsen.. Norwegian Roots

Thanks Beg for informing me of that information, I think I will put his search aside... I have lots of other trails to follow up. Like I said Albert fathered at least 11 or 12 children and three are still alive which is really awesome, one I talk to on the phone at least every few weeks, he is my Great Uncle in his 80's and a nice old fella and never knew I existed until a few months ago! Also some other blood relatives have been in touch and want to meet up at some stage which is nice too. I feel quite lucky in that respect.
Cheers Glen

Thank you Jan for taking the time to look at your end. Yes it does seem that Albert (if thats his real name) took on a different identity when he arrived in NZ. Makes me wonder why? Hmm...so not sure whether I can get any further with the Norway ancestry if this is the case.
Cheers Glen.

Hi Kaysii thanks for the reply. Your thoughts on his name change has raised some interesting questions and to be honest I'm starting to think along the same line that he has changed his name for some reason.

When I first saw the marriage certificate with William Williamsen, my initial thought was suspicion about Albert's real name or something thats been altered. Family stories had surmised that he was on the run from something hence why he got out of Norway which would tie in with the name change etc to hide his identity.

Hmm.... I guess maybe try and find something on his mothers side and go from there... Guess I'll keep looking and see if I can find something that ties up. Will try swapping names around in searches and go from there I guess.  This is turning to a Sherlock Holmes mystery!
Thanks for you help :) Regards Glen.

Europe / Albert Williamsen..Norwegian Roots & New Zealand.
« on: Wednesday 22 May 13 23:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi there I am trying to trace my great grandfather Albert Williamsen back to Norway. He was born around 1890, birthplace Kragerø, he left Norway and travelled to New Zealand and arrived here around 1907 but from the family stories he sneaked his way into NZ as he jumped ship at some point. He never immigrated fully as far as I know. He also was a Seaman.

Albert stayed in New Zealand and married in 1915 and had about 11 children. On the marriage certificate his Father is William Williamsen and his Mother is Annie Williamsen - her maiden name is Nelson. Albert died in 1965.

I have been looking on Family Search and through the Norway Birth Registers for the Telemark and cannot seem to find him anywhere. Albert was an elusive character and kept 'under the radar' and was always worried that the authorities would find him and send him back to Norway.

Even though his place of birth on the marriage certificate states Kragerø, he may have been born elsewhere in Norway and since I don't have his birth certificate its uncertain. His NZ Alien register just says Norway as birthplace it doesn't give a specific area.

I have also posted here in the New Zealand section about this topic and if you read the posts there you will see that we haven't had much luck in finding him so thought I'd post here and see if anyone could give me some idea on where to look next. Thanks in advance,  :)
Glen

Well there's always a chance that he was born elsewhere in Norway as well, and thats the thing I don't actually know, from his age given around 1890 is correct but whether it was in Kragero I've only got what information on the certificates to go by. His birth certificate would  be really handy right now.. ;D ;D

On the marriage certificate it states the birthplace as being Kragero, Norway, so I guess thats right 'but' he may have lied about his place of birth as well. Family stories I've heard is that he stayed 'under the radar' as he didn't want to be found by the authorities and sent back home, so who knows... ::)

If you are convinced that Albert was born in Kragerø and in 1890, there are the census returns for 1891 here http://www.rootschat.com/links/0u27/ .  The thing is, that you'd need to do a bit more research about which census areas to look at as there are thousands of pages  ::)

Wikipedia says:
Quote
Villages in Kragerø include Helle, Sannidal, Skåtøy, Stråholmen, Jomfruland, and Portør.

The 1900 census in Norwegian is indexed here http://www.rootschat.com/links/0u28/ but I can't say I've had any luck finding your people using various search criteria.

Yes Albert was a seaman, that was his occupation on the marriage certificate as well so that could be a place to look as well, thanks Beg, worth checking out

OKAY... ;D I visited the Archives today and did find something on Albert but a couple of things stumped the archivists though.

First we looked at the Emergency Precautions Scheme files (see Post#8) and there is some correspondence there which I took photographs of but the second file is missing - now this caused a bit of stir amongst the staff and they had 3 people looking for this second file and there's a file box but it was empty.
In the first file was some letters to Albert who was applying to be part of the scheme but because he was an Alien they were questioning his application and since the second file is missing - can't go any further.

In regards to the Alien Registers I did get this from a genealogy CD that the Porirua Library had as below -

1917 ALIEN RECORDS:

NAME - WILLIAMSON, ALBERT
DATE - 1917
AGE - 28
YEARS IN NZ - 10
PLACE - WAIMEA
PAGE 259 - FURTHER ENQUIRES TO NZSG FAMILY RESEARCH CENTRE

So could this be a record of those files that don't exist? I showed them what I had and they did say that this is more than likely the only file on Albert they have.
Also looked through the Police Gazettes for 1907/08 as per his arrival date from the info above and found nothing.

We did look at an Alien register card indexes and found nothing which again surprised the staff... don't know if it was the same ones mentioned above by Twiggy.
I didn't know about the General Biographical Card Index, thanks for that Spades when I'm next in there will have a look - I took the day off work especially for this and had some other stuff to look for as well (which I did have success on!) so didn't get  a chance to look into everything I wanted to.
They said that the WW1 reserve rolls only had basic information on them but again ran out time to look at the actual registers on the microfiche.

Spades/Twiggy/Beg - Thanks so much for you help so far with all this, its really appreciated.  ;)

Beg -  I read your post about the family search results - Will definitely have a look myself as well, I think I did search these ages ago and came back with similar results...Albert was rather elusive in life and in death it seems! The birth register link you asked about is here -  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0u13/ as per Twiggys earlier posts.

Twiggy - Kragero is mentioned on the marriage certificate.

I guess we just keep on looking, I think I'll post a request up on the European section on here and see if that yields any result.

So the search continues.... :)

Cheers Glen

Hi Beg, if you look at Reply #4 Twiggy gives the link to the birth registers there. I just tried to look on Family Search and it bounced back mentioning some technical difficulty at the moment. I think I did do a search on there a while ago and didn't find anything that matched.
Cheers Glen :)
