Pedley's orchard goes back to 1870's and the census of 1871 - my great grandfather was born there

You've all been brilliant! Thanks so much!

Prawncocktails map was fantastic - so useful to be able to 'map' old and new together!

I did find an explanation of 'Rents' once as being slum areas being built in the passageway of other buildings, although I can't remember where I found that now - note to self, must reference things! So if they're not marked on maps I guess it wouldn't be a surprise, and researching my tree, most of my family were paupers who ended up in workhouses at some time so that housing description seems to match where they'd likely end up!

London and Middlesex / maps of london to locate old/obscure street names
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
HI
Trying to find how I can get maps detailing very old London street names - for example:
Pedley's Orchard, Mile End Old Town from around 1870
Sands Rents, Bermondsey from around 1860

I'm trying to plot the various locations my relatives moved around to, and struggling to find where these may have been - any help gratefully received!

thanks so much for the response Greyhound 37.  I had totally forgotten I'd posted this!  Since then I have actually managed to discover some more information as more of it is being released online.  I will still check out the information you have given me and contact the brothers.

Many thanks for your help

Hi,
they did live in Ireland.  Unfortunately I'm finding it difficult to tell if any of the family are on the 1901 census as I have no other names to go by - Catherine had died by then, although have no idea when, and am unable to find her wedding certificate, so have no idea what her father's name was........

Galway / Howley family of Ardrahan c 1880's

I am trying to locate information on the Howley family who I believe may have come from Ardrahan? Unfortunately I know very little about them, other than Catherine Howley married Patrick Kennedy from Ballylin prior to 1887.  I have no idea when they married, as I haven't been able to find any marriage information.  I have no idea when or where Catherine died, or who her parents might have been.

Sorry, not much for anyone to go on!  If anyone is able to provide any information I'll be extremely grateful!  Howley may actually be spelt Howly or even Hawly or Hawley.......

Galway / Ardrahan marriage
« on: Thursday 29 August 13 16:07 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a marriage document for Thomas Kennedy and Margaret Larkin.  I was advised by the priest of Craughwell church that they married in Ardrahan parish church on 20th Feb 1917.  I have not been able to find any information in the UK that confirms this.  I have contacted the parish priest for Ardrahan but unfortunately had no response.  If I apply to the government records office for southern Ireland, is it likely there will be a copy there, or is it likely only to be in the parish?

Many thanks - I know trying to find information on Irish ancestors is a bit of a nightmare  ;)

I wouldn't have thought it likely he'd get a procession if he was a volunteer though? He was 45 at death

I have a photo, apparently of my great grandfather's death procession.  I say apparently because it is a fire service procession and I have not found any evidence my great grandfather was in the fire service - his death certificate states he was a cab driver.

My great grandfather was John James Holdsworth Peters (sometimes Holdsworth was included, sometimes not as that was his step father's name).  He was born in 1869 in Reigate, and died 1915 in Nutley Lane, Reigate.  From census information I don't think he ever left the area. If anyone can advise of an organisation that might be able to help, that would be great.  I tried attaching a photo but have been told it is too large (?)
