I would be interested to know how you know the precise date of birth etc of Andrew Carey - do you have a family bible with this information?
Did he have any children before he emigrated to USA with his wife? And is there any information on his brothers and sisters? What was his job?

Ireland / Re: Thomas Carey born around 1755

I have recently found a Thomas Carrey in Carrickfergus, N Ireland. He witnessed a deed in 1781, and someone of the same name was a freeman of the town in 1803, by virtue of birth there (i.e. must have been at least 21 then?). These may not be the same person of course. There were several men of this surname, involved in transporting coal from Irvine to Carrickfergus at about this time. Perhaps some lived in Ayrshire, others at the other end of the supply line.
I would be glad to know if you are still interested in this family, which I know has many descendants in Scotland - I wonder if Thomas is connected with other possible descendants in Carrickfergus.

I have just spent a few days in PRONI in Belfast - the folder D1800 contains 88 documents, related to the Thompson and Legg families, 1796 - 1934. You can get a summary of the contents from the PRONI website but I think you would need to go in person to find a specific document.

What was the occupation of William Carrey, born 1804, and do you know his parents' names?

I have a record of a William Carrey, who was co-owner of a ship (Peggy of Irvine) built in Dumbarton in 1790 but later registered in Belfast. He was Master of the ship in 1796 and Anthony Carrey was a co-owner. It is possible that a son of the same name was born in Scotland in 1804, but the ship and the other owner remained in Carrickfergus.

One descendant of the Carrickfergus family proposed that William was born before 1788: if we say 1770-75, he would be old enough to be a master mariner in 1796 and to have a son in 1804 and also to be the same man mentioned as a farmer in the Tithe Applotment book for Carrickfergus in 1827. But there is no evidence of any descendants in Carrickfergus - perhaps they went back to Clydeside?
