Kildare / Re: O'Brien Family

Patrick born 1837 to John Brien and Mary Ann Dunn Flemingtown, TwoMileHouse, Kildare in my tree.  I don’t know if he survived to adulthood but all his siblings emigrated with their mother to North America in the 1850s after the father died.  Patrick would have been old enough to plough his own furrow in the 1850s.  Maybe the date a bit out for your guy but close nonetheless, esp for the era.  John’s brothers James and William also sons Patrick but both likely born later again.  Have you done a DNA test?

Kildare / Re: Kelly/Kearns Mullacash c1900

The Carnalway parish 1901 census records are not on the nationalarchives website, frustratingly.  However the census information on Mullacash households at 1901 is on the rootsireland site.  Hope it helps John.

Ireland / Catholic marriage dispensation
« on: Sunday 09 August 15 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello.  Great to have the RC microfilms online with NLI and I note on browsing a 3&3 & 4&4 dispensation in my brethern, 1850s Kerry.  Does this mean they were 2nd cousins and 3rd cousins through 2 different lines?  One of the two would also have been underage, I'd have thought this would also warrant a dispensation but that doesn't seem to be referenced?  Thanks for your thoughts.  J

Galway / Re: Police constable-Galway

I've only just spotted this thread.  I am a great great great grandson of Catherine Lewis of Mullacash who is a sister of the William Lewis who erected the headstone in Two Mile House, Kildare, and an aunt of Charles Lewis the Oughterard policeman.  My Catherine married Peter Kennedy of Mullacash / Harristown Common Kildare and is buried about 10 meters from the Lewis grave.  According to my records, this elder Charles had 6 or possibly 7 siblings and his mother was Mary Mooney.  Charles' daughter Rose eventually inherited the Lewis land back in Kildare - I know her (Clarke) descendants and in fact they were my next door neighbours growing up.  Delighted to swap info if you post me.

Thanks Ruskie, it may well be, or indeed a local name for a place based on its physical attributes

Does anyone know to where specifically this placename refers?  My great great grandfather reputedly married a lady from here.  All thoughts welcome.

Wicklow / Re: Wilkinson lookup please
« on: Tuesday 14 April 15 20:01 BST (UK)  »
I have some Wilkinson connections and did some work before - excuse teh stream of conscious below ...

Church baptisms:
Richard Wilkinson b27 May 1838 Kilcoole, Delgany, Wicklow to John Wilkinson (lawyer) & Hanah ?
Also the 1824 Richard from previous post in Wexford

1829 well before church records in a lot of parishes.

According to Tithe Applotments, the only recorded one in Wicklow is
John R Wilkinson in Ballintemple Wicklow in 1824 - this is near Avoca village and not Delgany.  As a lawyer, Delgany John may not have been a tenant.
Several in Wexford

By Griffith Valuation in 1853 http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&familyname=Wilkinson&firstname=&offset=0&countyname=WICKLOW&parishname=&unionname=&baronyname=&totalrows=21&PlaceID=0&wildcard=

Wilkinson heads of household in Co Wicklow in following parishes:
Kilcoole (Richard), Kilpoole, Glenealy, Newcastle (2, including another Richard) & Rathnew.  In Kilcoole the Richard was subletting to other tenants.

My guess is Hadden should be Madden.  There was several Madden families in Wicklow for the Griffith valuation (1850s) including a Jane in Rathnew (suggesting family name).

John Wilkinson married Sarah Elliss in Newcastle 1834
A Jane Madden married Patrick Smullen Bray 1825

Kildare / Re: Marriage in Naas
« on: Sunday 12 April 15 23:32 BST (UK)  »
Seems highly likely, Jane is a derivative of Johanna and unusual to see "Jane" direct in RC records, and probability of two military Frederick Oconnor and Joanna Maher marriages in Ireland around same time next to zero.  These records are from Rootsireland.

Above is interesting though .. Is this your guy ?  Ages highly unreliable in Irish census.  Did he remarry ?  In 1911 wife Margaret no children but he has 7 living so perhaps widowed or divorced.
