Hi Carol,

Thanks fro your message, and the restoration. I was online earlier, in the metro on the way to work, and a like lot of times when on the mobile, I can read messages but not get the pictures. Finally at home now with a proper computer where I can appreciate the photos  :D
Thanks again for the nice work... I thin the eyes were difficult on this one for some reason, but they more natural on this version.  I guess it must have been hard not to blink when these were getting taken?  Not sure how long the exposure times were back in those days?

Kind regards,

Chas

Hi,

Thanks for your comment. I hadn't thought about it that way, but your explanation makes a lot of sense. I can see how the photography may have touched up the buttons, the watch fob, and a few highlights around the eyes.  Anybody have a guess about when this may have been taken? Thanks.

Kind regards,

Chas

Hi,

here is another photo from the collection I got from a distant relative. She sent me some scans of photos she found in her grandfather's garage, and then mysteriously vanished from the internet. So, no additional info available...
Anyhow, to me this hardly even looks like a photo...- more of a drawing or sketch.  I'm not sure if the strange look of the image is due to a faded original, poor scan, or even somebody doing some touch-up work, or messing with the scan?? I would love to hear the opinions of folks who have looked at a lot of old photos-- I am amazed how much you guys know about his stuff!!
Thanks in advance for any thought about this!

  Kind regards,

Chas

One Name Studies: A to G / Re: ANDRE - All dates

Hi Sparham,

Yes, I remember getting some flak about Major Andre in school (in the U.S. he is known as the facilitator to the traitor Benedict Arnold :)
Champagney is close to the border of both Switzerland and Germany, and it's possible that my branch of the Andres originated from one of those places. They were mostly peasants, and tended to stick around the same cluster of villages in the area, but occasionally somebody would marry into the family form Germany or elsewhere.
At least by the late 17th century, all my ancestors were Roman Catholic, but it's impossible to say what they might have been up to before that.... they would not have had the resources to emigrate and could have been forced to convert, as many were in that era.  On the other hand, I have no evidence that my ancestors were anything but Catholics.
I know there is a DNA ancestry group for people with French origins, but I think they have only a few Andres enrolled, so I'm not sure if having my Y-DNA tested would provide any useful info.

Kind regards,

Chas

Hi,

i am descended from Jean Baptiste Andre, who was from Champagney France (in Haute Soane, near Belfort).  He was possibly not born in Champagney, but was definitely married there in 1752 and died there in 1804. Although both his marriage record and death records state that he was born in Champagney about 1722, I have not been able to locate him (or any other ANDRE) in Champagney before he showed up there and got married.  In general, the church records in that village are quite complete starting  in the 1690s, so it is rather mysterious as to his origin.
In 1906 my grandfather Eugene Emile Andre immigrated to New York, and eventually moved to Chicago.

Kind regards,

Chas Andre
