Hi,

Thankyou so much for all you help!

I was digging through the parish record earlier and came upon this - a document I've really needed from 2 years later. Same parish and baptism record.

The daughter is named Elen, but it also looks incredibly similar to her mothers spelling. Could it be that Ann's name is Elen also or does this actually say Ann as well? Think the last name mystery is solved in this much clearer document - Doras/Donas

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Who are Rachel/Rachael Agnew parents?
« on: Sunday 21 June 20 16:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi!

I am researching my ancestor Rachel/Rachael Agnew. I came upon this baptism record from Ireland but can't read much beyond 'Rachael of (can't read) Agnew'

Any help deciphering would be much appreciated! She is the second to last record.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could please help me. I've been trying to trace my family back for a long time and got it back (with difficulty) to Shaw Agnew b.Kilkeel abt.1818. He married an Eliza/Elizabeth Newell from what I can tell - though I have no marriage certificate or record.

Their children (Rachel, Sarah, Jane, James and Ellen) were baptised at Aanalong presbyterian Church.
My question is whether anyone could help me find Shaw's father? I cannot find many references to Shaw other than the Griffith's Valuation, his children's birth records and his death record (d.1879).

Thankyou in advance!

Hello,
I am really eager to find out more about my Irish ancestry (coming from England) but I am really struggling to move the 'Agnew' line back any further.
My ancestor Rachel Agnew (name follows the female line) b.1864 Kilkeel moved to York in the 1880's I believe. But I am trying to find more on her father, Shaw Agnew.
The only records of Shaw are his children's (Ellen and Rachel) birth records, the Griffiths Valuation and his death record:

Name:   Shaw Agnew
Estimated Birth Year:   abt 1817
Date of Registration:   Jan-Feb-Mar 1879
Death Age:   62
Registration district:   Kilkeel
Volume:   1
Page:   571
FHL Film Number:   101589

I can't find a record of a marriage to Eliza Newell who is the mother to his children and recorded as his wife in the Griffiths valuation. Nor can I find him on a census.
I really want to move this line further back, if anyone can help me in anyway I would be really grateful,
Thanks, R.

Thankyou so much for all your help. I showed what I've found so far to my mum (who's the original Agnew) and she has found it very interesting. All good fun. Many thanks.

Thankyou so much, My family come from Hull, Yorkshire and I think Rachel Agnew and Ellen Agnew both move to York as I found them both there.
I will look into the information you found as it all seems very plausible. Thank you so much for your help.

Thankyou, would they use a mothers maiden name in the birth record? I cannot find a record of their marriage, would you suggest this is because it is early to mid 18th century?
