Mayo / Re: The Dowdle family from Westport, Mayo
« on: Monday 18 January 21 10:52 GMT (UK)  »
In case it might be of interest: I have evidence of Dowdles in Westport in the late-18th century. I'm working on a book, an illustrated history of Westport, to be published by the local historical society, possibly towards the end of this year. I have come across the Dowdle name in old property records, which will be discussed in the book.

Mayo / Re: William Higgins born (Oughan?) Westport 1808

The 'Oughan?' you mention is most likely Oughaval, which is the name of the parish in which Westport town lies. There were a lot of Higgins families in Westport, most of whom would have been related to each other somehow. If you send me your email address I will try to help you a bit more, although it's difficult to find much from the early 1800s.

Mayo / Re: Where in County Mayo?

In the 1901 census there are not that many Feeneys living in Mayo aged 70 (+/- 5yrs). Perhaps one of them was a sibling of Margaret's. If you don't know any of her siblings' names, you could take the list of results, go to (e.g.) familysearch.org and search for their birth/marriage records. If you find any whose father's name was Patrick, then that's a possibility, the others you can eliminate. Then you could identify the parishes where the possibile siblings came from, then use parish records to look for a baptismal record for Margaret.

Mayo / Westport, Co. Mayo, Ireland

Hi,

I'm a member of Westport Historical Society (WHS) in Westport, Co. Mayo and I'm working on a book, an illustrated history of the town, to be published next year by WHS. All proceeds from sales of the book will go towards the running of the Clew Bay Heritage Centre, which is operated on a voluntary basis by members of WHS.

I am currently looking for old photos (drawings, paintings, etc.) of Westport people & places, of events which took place in Westport long ago, old Westport businesses & industries, local sports teams, clubs & organisations of the past, etc., etc. Any old Westport image is of interest!

If you have any images of Westport ancestors, or any of the other type of Westport image listed above, I would be very glad to hear from you! Or if you have any questions about the project, I would also be very happy to answer them.

Mayo / Re: Ford family, left Westport Co Mayo abt 1847
« on: Friday 09 August 13 12:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi Jo,
You may have a hard time getting any info on the Ford family in the 1840s - that's before births, marriages and deaths had to be registered (1864). But you could still try rootsireland.ie, official site for BMD records, which also has some church records. Ford is a relatively unusual name and not easy to mis-spell, so searching should be straightforward. Have a look at familysearch.org first though, it's free. Also, you could email Clew Bay Heritage Centre in Westport; they have a genealogy service, run by members of Westport Historical Society.
Good luck,
James
