Tipperary / Re: Clonmel Castle
« on: Monday 27 July 15 00:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi Benn999
Thank you for the update on Carey's Castle am I right in saying there was two brothers and a sister left here in Ireland one of the boys names was John Carey but I would like to find out his wife's name also if they moved to Dublin thank you Benn999
Regards Thomas Carey

The Rev Langer Carey of Careys Castle born 1788 died 1830 married Anne Labarte in 1812 the children of this marriage  were as follows, Garret Richard born 1813, ( inherited Carey's castle ) Peter born 1815, John born 1817, Edward born 1821, Robert born 1822 Langer born 1823, and Anna born 1825.

Doctor John Carey, Edward Carey, and Langer Carey emigrated to Australia in 1841 from Liverpool on the ship ' Columbine ' John Carey whom had qualified as a doctor in Dr Stevens hospital in Dublin served as ships surgeon during the 3 month voyage to Australia.

Sadly Peter Carey there brother died in 1844 aged 20 years, there other remaining brother Robert died in 1845 aged 23 years, both boys along with there Father and Mother are interred in Marlfield graveyard Clonmel,  this left just Garret Richard, his sister Anna and his mother Anne Labarte Carey still residing at the castle, according to local tradition often retold by some of the estate workers who were employed there at the time, Garret Richard was absent from the Castle away on business when the 3 brothers departed, there mother Anne Labarte Carey and there sister Anna waved them off from an upstairs window as they departed from the Castle, heading for the coast on 3 white horses, certain that they were seeing them for the last time, Anna with her husband Tom Jellico did however visit them in Australia some years later. so unless i'm missing something i cant find any other brother that would have gone to Dublin, there were of course lots of cousins so i may be missing something, hope some of this helps Ben999, ps sorry for the late reply.

tomoc1, John Carey took up residence in Careys Castle county Waterford in 1740, he was originally from Careysville Castle, Fermoy, county Cork, the Carey's were cousins to the Green family whom resided in Kilmanahan Castle some 3 miles distant from Careys Castle, I believe Garret Richard Carey was the last of the family to live in the castle up to about 1890 when he moved to Keylong House on the outskirts of the town of Cahir, county Tipperary, Careys Castle was subsequently leased to the o'Mahony and Walsh families, it burned down around 1921 and has been in a ruinous state since, 3 brothers of the Carey family did leave around 1841 and traveled to N.S.W. Australia, departing Liverpool on the ship Columbine I believe, if you need further information you can contact me here or on the private link, hope this information is of some help, Ben999

Martin, as far as I can make out, the churches you will need to check are Emly, Nenagh, and Borrisokane, luckily none of them are a million miles apart, I'm sure there must be a Church of Ireland directory to elicit, as to which unions these parish Churches are part of, so many have been closed over the years, others amalgamated, as the Protestant congregation in many rural parts has shrunk, some smaller Churches now only have a service on a monthly basis with the service being rotated, I would advise that you ring the Church of Ireland County Diocesan office ahead of any visit, I wonder if you might know in what Capacity the Carver family were engaged in within the county of Tipperary, be it Military, Rectors, Land owners, or in business re-Commerce.

Ben

Waterford / Re: Lalor Confusion
« on: Saturday 08 February 14 10:30 GMT (UK)  »
Powerstown is about 3 miles north west of clonmel, Poulnagunoge St. Mary’s is in waterford county, but only about a good spit outside Clonmel, the river Suir runs through the town, on its north bank is county Tipperary, on its southern bank is county Waterford, however and I'm hoping not to confuse you further, Kilsheelen parish, and st Mary's Clonmel both serve portions of both counties, hence the births, marriages, and deaths could be registered in Clonmel tipperary, but those recorded could have been living just across the river in county waterford.

Waterford / Re: Micheal Mcgrath

Mountain Castle, parish of Modeligo, county Waterford, was one of many Castles held by the Mcgrath Family, originally a clan of Swordsmen from the Beara Peninsulla, in Cork, they held a line of about 7 Castles, (in-fee) between Kilmanahan Castle Clonmel, to Abbeyside Dungarvan, county Waterford, for there overlords, The Fitzgeralds of Desmond, this of course included Mountain Castle, Modeligo Parish Waterford, Mountain Castle is today owned by a family called Nugent, and is run as a small Hotel-Guest House, that is a brief Synopsis of there involvement in Waterford County.

noted while perusing Basset's Directory for Tipperary, 1889 it listed, Michael Dower Rathkeevan Clonmel Tipperary, I take it from the location about 5 miles outside the Town of Clonmel that they were Farmers, however I can recall while doing research some years ago, this very unusual name cropping up, at a very much earlier period in Clonmels History,,,,, so it would appear that though small in number, the Dower Family have had a long connection with Clonmel, when I get the chance I will throw my eye on the local Graveyard Records, and Burkes History of Clonmel, which im pretty sure mentiones this Family, if I can locate any information for you which may be relevant, I will post it back here, Ben
