Antrim / RINGLAND
« on: Thursday 04 March 21 21:08 GMT (UK)  »
Searching for info on Agnes (Nancy?) RINGLAND b 1826 in Ireland, married Dec 1848 Knockbreda, Belfast to Alexander Gibson (1825-1895). Agnes and Alexander moved to Barrow-in-Furness and Agnes died in 1898. Alexander died in 1895.

Interested in anything on Agnes's family. Have a possible father of Joseph Ringland b 1801 but not sure if this is accurate, and nothing else.

Thanks!

Midlothian / PURVES (also PURVIS)

I posted the following on the Tyrone, Ireland page. But since the origins appear to be in Scotland, I think it could be useful to post here also!
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=845492.msg7124079#msg7124079

So - I believe the last Purvis of our line before James Purves (born in either 1720 in Tyrone or 1719 in Greenlaw, Berwick) was James Purves (of Purveshaugh) 1691-1774. I need help confirming this.

"My 5th great-grandfather was James Purvis of Tyrone (b 1720 County Londonderry d 1801 County Tyrone). Birth might have been 1719 Greenlaw, Berwick, Scotland). I've done Ancestry DNA, and have confirmed with dna back to James' son Dolway Purvis (1753-1836) and his wife Sarah Hooper. It also confirms back to James Purvis (1720-1801) and his wife Mary Margaret (1724-1801). I'm pretty sure that James' parents were James Purves (1691-1774) and Joannet Pringle (1695-)...but no one else researching this Purves line seems to have confirmed the connection from Ireland back to Scotland.

Anyone else working on this PURVES/PURVIS line?   Thanks!!!"

Tyrone / James PURVIS of Tyrone 1720-1801

My first time doing this sort of request...

Marmaduke Shaw b. 1710 was, I believe, my husband's 6th great-grandfather. His son, also Marmaduke, was born in 1736, also in Yorkshire. The family had a great many males named Marmaduke over the years...often several in a generation. I have Marmaduke Shaw's back to about 1675, but am having difficulty knowing if I'm following the right branch of the tree. My husband 'did his DNA' with Ancestry and I've traced directly back to Marmaduke Shaw (1756-1813) and Ann Evershed (1786-?). I'm pretty sure that before London the Shaw family were in Yorkshire - which makes sense as research tells me the name Marmaduke became popular in the Yorkshire area in the 17th century. I have several other Marmaduke Shaw's (1710, 1675 etc) from Yorkshire, along with a few relatives - but I'm not sure who to put where!

So I guess what I'm look for is any of the following:
- does anyone know anything about the Shaw family who lived in the area then and included at least one of 'our' Marmadukes?
- I'm quite curious as to the origin of the name Marmaduke in Yorkshire - anything more than what I've found online would be great!
- and this might be more of a general question, but once I've hit a bit of a brick wall, but have names/info - any techniques to put them in their right places? I seem to be missing the branches to put them on! Is this a case of where I need to fill in siblings etc to find the appropriate branches to hang our people on?

Thanks!
Christine

Hi - That's what I thought first, but she was actually baptized twice! The first time was 14 Jan 1921 at Victoria Presbyterian Church in Montreal. Both parents were present. The second time was the day all three children were baptized in January 1926 at Chalmers United Church.

Do you by any chance have any info on the family?

thanks,
Christine

My husband's mother Marjorie Smith (b 1925 Montreal), daughter of Alexander W. Smith (1884-1932) and Emily Whiteman (1888-1926) was adopted in 1926 after Emily died. There were at least two other children, who were baptised at the same time as Marjorie, the month before Emily died. I've found no record of any children that might match Marjorie's brother and sister.

We are looking for:

1. Gordon Alexander Smith Born: 31 May 1921 Montreal, Quebec
2. Edna Gibson Smith Born: 04 August 1919 Montreal, Quebec

Marjorie was adopted by a family in Baie Comeau, Quebec - we suspect the adoption might have been arranged through her the church. The children were baptised at the Chalmers United Church in Montreal.

Any leads greatly appreciated

Wow - I posted my original info/request back in 2013! After my daughter & I went to the UK in Feb. 2014 our son got married then we moved in 2016. I had not been on Ancestry.ca since sometime in 2014, but finally got back on this spring. Now I'm addicted. I asked my husband about a month ago if he'd like to do the DNA test and surprisingly he said yes - so we are now awaiting results.

I see since I posted in 2013 a number of others have also with interesting connections. I'm working on both the McCubbins and my Risbey family.

I find myself filling in lots of blanks easily all over our tree, but then hitting mysteries. David McCubbin's wife Clara was initially a brick wall of a mystery for me - lots of info from when they got married in India til they died, but I couldn't find anything else. Finally I put her family history together - the clue that did it for me was when I found a Shaw family with a Marmaduke. Since David and Clara named the first son born in Canada Marmaduke it seemed significant. Then when I found her father Marmaduke Shaw died in Montreal in 1913 that glued it all together.

So I've now traced the Shaws back to where they were living in Yorkshire in the late 1600's. The furthest-back Shaw connection I've found is Marmaduke Shaw who died in Nidd in 1717. From 'our' Marmaduke Shaw who died in 1913 to Marmaduke Shaw who died in 1717 I've found over 20 Marmaduke Shaws either directly in line or uncles etc. I'm sure there are many more if I really enlarged the tree of Shaws. But I've now 'run out of' Marmadukes in the Yorkshire area around Nidd - or anywhere - back in the 1600's. Though I've now discovered a number of men called Marke Shaw, living in the general area of Nidd. I suspect there is a connection - but if so why the switch from Marke to Marmaduke?

Curious!

Durham / Risbey family - County Durham
« on: Tuesday 12 November 13 01:04 GMT (UK)  »
My father was Eric Risbey, b 1910 in Harlepool, Co Durham to John Robert Risbey and Hannah Risbey (nee Gamble).  Dad immigrated to Canada in 1927, and his parents a bit later.  Several of Dad's siblings stayed in Co Durham, and several others also immigrated to Canada.  I've learned a lot, and do know that a generation or two earlier the Risbeys came from the Nailsworth area.

My daughter and I will be visiting Scotland/England for the first time in February.  I'd love to hear from any Risbeys in England (or Scotland?) who maybe I could connect with on the trip...and/or who I can learn more about our family's history from!

thanks

Looking for my husband's ancestors/relatives.  My husband's great-grandfather David McCubbin (wife Clarissa (nee Shaw) b 1865) left Scotland between 1890 and 1892 and immigrated to Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.  David had 2 children when they left Scotland:  Walter, born 1880 in India and David John, born 1890 in Scotland.  Clarissa was born in England, and they were married in Bombay.  David's parents were John McCubbin (b about 1827 in Urr) and Grace MacRobert (born 1819 in Kirkgunzeon).  My research shows that all of John and Grace's children were born and lived in Kirkcudbrightshire.

I've become very interested in tracking down family history - most especially because our daughter and I will be visiting Scotland and England in February 2014.  I'd love to hear from anyone who
is a McCubbin living in the Kirkcudbright area
knows more about this line of the McCubbins
might be able to give me some insight about what might have spurred David & Clarissa McCubbin to leave Scotland for Canada.  Wanderlust?  Hard economic times?

        Thanks!!
