Hi. I’m trying to trace John Wight’s family. I have that he was born in Scotland and died in Echuca in 1901. His sister is my great grandmother.

We are in the right area as Marion was born in East Lothian. Maybe not a sibling but possibly related.

Hi Heather. I have a Smollett Isles in my tree. She was born in 1829 and her mother was Marion Sked (1786-1859). Marion parents were John & Jane (Gray) and she married John Isles in 1806 in Leith.
Does Marion appear in your tree at all?
Thanks

Kilkenny / Re: Connors
« on: Friday 28 November 14 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Noel, all certs just give Kilkenny as birthplace but you were on the dot for time in the colony. His death cert says 62 years in the colony and that was 1931 so must have arrived as a 20 year old in 1869. will now look for immigration records.
Thanks

Kilkenny / Re: Connors

Thanks Noel. The only solid information I have on Thomas is that he was married in Aust in 1877. Here parents are named as John & Julia Connors. His death cert. has his mother as Mary Kenny/Kenney and that he was born in Kilkenny. It states he was 82 at the time so this takes his birth back to 1849.  Maybe Mary was his first wife who has died. I have no idea when he arrived and with whom!

Yes, I agree - fantastic work. Thank you, I would never have noticed those fingers. My guess is that he may be an Isles. My g grandfather John Isles b in Guadaloupe in 1814 and arrived in Australia in 1854. His father was also John Isles and was in the Royal Artillery - b in Clayworth Nottinhanshire but moved with his brother Thomas to Leith. He had children in Ireland in 1812 and Barbados 1817 & 1819.  I'm assuming the photos belong to the John who travelled to Australia  as there are several other portraits that came from Haddington & Edinburgh. Otherwise I have one of his sisters, Mary, marrying Alexander Malcom and then Hugh Stevenson.

Tipperary / Re: SUSAN ROACH AND JOHN O'CONNOR TIPPERARY

This is so long ago for both of you but here goes. I am trying to trace Thomas O' Connor/Connors born in Kilkenny in around 1849 and who ended up in Woodend Australia also. He married Catherine Hart and one of Catherine's sisters married a Casey. Catherine's parents were Edward and Catherine Hart who were born in Galway and Kings respectively. Do any of these names connect with you. Sharron

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: What can you tell me about this soldier
« on: Saturday 08 March 14 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for that information. I would like to identify this fellow. Is there a way to access enlistment records. The photo is 6 x 9.5cm and has the name of an Australian photographer on the back so I am guessing it was brought to Australia and replicated for family.
