Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Two signatures for comparison

I think there's a good chance they're by the same person. The "artha" and also the "n" in the surnames look very alike (apart from the slant which, I think, could easily change in 40 years). The form of the "M" is a cause for doubt, certainly, but I know from personal experience some people are not consistent in the form they use.

Below is Eliza Shreeve on 22 May 1705.

Am I correct to assume that the entry for Eliza is actually her burial/death.

Also do you think this is a child of Johannes and Elizabetha Shreeve?

I think the entry is for the burial of Elizabetha, the daughter (filia) of Johannes & Eliza Shreeve. Eliza is recorded as the wife (ux:).

Hope this helps.

Sussex / Re: Ovenden/Brisenden surname from Mayfield

Hi Meretta,

The Mayfield general register has the following burial:

16 May 1803 James Ovenden 36 years

I failed to find any baptism for him in the Mayfield register but if he's Maria's husband at least you have more evidence of his year of birth.

Good luck in your research,

Sussex / Re: Heathfield Parish Registers
« on: Tuesday 24 May 22 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Kim,

I have the PRTS transcript of Heathfield registers. It says for burials in 1698 (and several years around that time) only the BT entries are available.

The HARMER entries in 1698 are:
1 June buried Mary HARMAR
18 June buried William HARMAR

No age or relationship information is given, but around that time it often was. For example, the entry before that of William records the burial of "Sarah the wife of John NORDEN" on 4 June. This doesn't give confidence in the entry for Mary HARMER being that of William's wife.

There is no entry for the 3 January, even after allowing for the old style calendar.

Many thanks for the help.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: 1901 lookup, please - Richard G COTTINGHAM
« on: Wednesday 30 March 22 22:13 BST (UK)  »
Is the surname correct?

Yes, it's COTTINGHAM. The TT is poorly printed in the scan of the births index that I viewed so I can understand the LL misreading; but the index is in alphabetical order and the names before and after both clearly begin COTT...

Sussex Lookup Requests / 1901 lookup, please - Richard G COTTINGHAM
« on: Wednesday 30 March 22 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

Can anyone provide me with the details of Richard G COTTINGHAM's household in 1901? Richard's birth was registered in Horsham and he would have been 7 years old at the time of the census. I guess he can be found in Horsham in 1901. I'm particularly interested in his father's given name, age and place of birth.

Many thanks,
Stovepipe

Many thanks, JenB, for an incredibly speedy reply and informative - the link tells me all I need to know.

Looks like Frank did remarry. Alice is a bit of a surprise.

Thanks again
