Thanks for all that info Ken.
On the photograph I have of him, It's not clear but I'm sure he is wearing one of the Imperial Service badges over his right breast pocket. Does this mean he went abroad first to get the badge, or that he just agreed to go abroad if need be and got the badge because of the agreement?
He also has a circular badge on his right arm with what looks like an S on it. I've been told this could be a scout badge so he was trained in map reading, using a compass and reconnaissance. Does this sound about right? (I know nothing on military badges!)
Could you explain more about the stars please? I've not heard about them being given for attending the summer camps.
The forms I have from his service records I got off Ancestry website are that about his joining up:
Army Form E.501 Territorial Force 4 year's Service in the United Kingdom for the 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters.
This one says
Q10. Do you now being to the Army, the Marines, the Militia, the Militia Reserve, the Territorial Force, the Royal Navy, the Army Reserve (Regular or Special), or any Naval Reserve Force? If so what Corps? - A. No
Q.11. Have you ever served in the Army, the Marines, the Militia, the Militia Reserve, the Imperial Yeomanry, the Territorial Force, the Royal Navy, the Volunteers, the Army Reserve (Regular or Special), or any Naval Reserve Force? If so, please state Corps and cause of discharge. - A. Yes 1st VB Sherwood Foresters. (Then in pencil next to it) 3 yrs
Then on a another form listed Army Form E.502 Territorial Force 4 Years Service in the United Kingdom (but at the top written on is 'Duplicate'), but has a different layout out but some of the same questions as the previous form, and in a different handwriting.
Q.4 Do you now belong to, or have ever served in the Royal Navy, the Army, the Royal Marines, the Militia, the Special Reserve, the Territorial Force, the Imperial Yeomanry, the Volunteers, the Army Reserve, the Militia Reserve, or any Naval Reserve Force? If so state which unit, and, if discharged, cause of discharge. - A. No
Is this just human error? Or could he be hiding something?
Also why would they have to sign two different forms like this but with the same information on?
Many Thanks!
