Hi Forguette, thanks for clarifying that.

I don’t understand the cutting though ?

Young woman taking up goods in the name of Alexander Allan. Public be warned.

Does this mean the young woman was buying goods in Alexander’s name without his permission?

I don’t know Aberdeen and where Castle Street is.  If he died at that address, what would be the local boneyard?

Regards, Swally

Forguette,

I have never said he was born in Peterhead.  James was born in Inverurie. I have it somewhere that we think his father, Alexander, may have been born in Peterhead.

Where did you get the 1835 info? Valuation rolls? If that’s the case there will be no mention of his wife Mary.  That’s a great find, if it is him.  So is it just a matter of checking the valuation rolls for subsequent years till he falls off?

Many thanks for your help so far Forguette. If you assist any further that would be brilliant.

Thanks,

Swally

Hi Monica,

That indeed is the correct family.

Robert was born on the 3rd January 1852 and christened at Inverurie, Aberdeen, on the 8th of February 1852.  He was the son of James and Jane Aiken.  James and Jane had the following children -

Alexander
James Allan            1836.
Elizabeth Mearns Allan      1838.
Jean Allan              19th December 1840 and Christened 6th January 1842.
William Allan        14th January 1846 and Christened    1st March 1846.
John Clark Allan      4th March 1849 and Christened 15th April 1849.
Robert                 Christened   8th February 1852.

I have been unable to find anything on James, Elizabeth or Jean.  I believe that the girls died before statutory registration as I can find no deaths for them.  On the 1861 Census there is Helen but I have searched for her birth with no luck, either Helen was used as a pet name or she could be James & Jane's granddaughter, possibly a daughter born out of wedlock with James or Alexander.  I have been unable to find her death or her marriage.

On November the 10th 1869 Robert’s father, James, died aged 58, at his home address, 82, Laphook Place, Inverurie.  The cause of death was noted as typhoid. Robert's brother, John Clark Allan, registered the death and gave his father's occupation as a carter and the details his father's parents.  James's parents were Alexander Allan (Inn Keeper - deceased), this is why I was looking for the death details of that particular "Vinter" and Mary Simpson (deceased).

Robert's mother, Jane (Atkin), died aged 74 on the 28th November 1883 at 8 Blackall Road, Inverurie.

My cousin has checked all the Robert Allans births in Peterhead for his time period with no success.

If you can turn over a stone or two I'd be grateful.

Thanks,

Swally

GR2,
Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure when he died, to be honest. I have been unable to find any further information on Alexander, a lady offered to check Huntly graveyard for a headstone/burial but sadly she was unable to find anything.  I'm not sure where to look now.

Swally

Aberdeenshire Completed Lookups / Inverurie Poor Relief Records
« on: Saturday 20 March 21 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Guys,

I wonder if anyone has access to Inverurie "Poor relief records"? I am looking for a record for Jane Allan (Jane Aiken), died aged 74 on the 28th November 1883 at 8 Blackall Road, Inverurie.  Her death was registered by the Inspector of the Poor.
I have no idea where she is buried, probably Inverurie in a Pauper's Grave.
Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Swally
