Quaker Family History / Daniel Wheeler born 1771
« on: Tuesday 09 August 16 17:30 BST (UK)  »
Just wondered if anybody could help in a bit of research I'm doing. History books record that Daniel Wheeler, a notable Quaker, born in Mayfair London in 1771, moved to Sheffield (Handsworth Woodhouse) in the 1790s to join his sister who had become a Quaker. He married my 1st cousin 6x removed, Jane Brady. Just wondered if anybody could find out about Daniel's sister (like her name) and any other records for her. Both their parents, William and Sarah Wheeler, had died by 1783.

Many thanks once again.  I've now used Google maps which confirms that the Three Horse Shoes was on the corner of Norfolk Street and Charles Street.  The pub with the same name on Jehu Lane just served to confuse me.  Does anybody have access to newspapers because there just has to be an obituary for him?  He also formed the brewery company on Orchard Street of 'Humberstone and Payne' but I can't find an obituary in the Sheffield Evening Telegraph.

Many thanks for all your help.  The Tyrer at 27 &29 Waingate ties in with the 1881 census when Henry Humberstone was a servant there.  It looks as though the Three Horse Shoes may have been on the corner of 190 Norfolk Street and Charles Street and it was completely destroyed in the Sheffield blitz.  Does anybody know if Norfolk Street was previously called Jehu Street as there are some references to a Three Horse Shoes on Jehu Street?  I know that Cambridge Street was originally known as Coal Pit Lane.

And yes I have found several newspaper references to Henry Humberstone including his stabbing.

Thanks Stan, from the 1881 census that enumeration district seems to be chock a block full of pubs and lodging houses.

Many thanks for your help.  I can't find any of his pubs on the list which presumably means the list is not complete as he is listed as 'licensed victualler' in the 1891 and 1901 censuses, and his widow in the 1911 census.

Can anybody please tell me what was the name of the pub at 27 & 29 Waingate in the Sheffield census of 1881.  Also the name of the pub at 43 Charles Street in 1901.  My cousin's husband, Henry Humberstone, worked at the Waingate pub before taking over the Plough on Broad Street and then the Three Horse Shoes on Norfolk Street.  His widow, Sarah Elizabeth Humberstone, subsequently took over the Sportsman on Cambridge Street.  She later emigrated to New York.  Also, I feel there must be an obituary for him in a local newspaper but have not been able to find one.  He died in November 1906.  Can anybody help please?

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Francis Carter Ball, Darlaston

Many thanks for your help here Trish.  Familysearch seems to have thrown up some family members that I was not aware of so I'll be looking at those.  It is interesting to see that the 1844 marriage between William Ball and Lydia Clark has William's father as a nailer.  Although I think this is an entirely different family I am wondering if 'nailer' is an occupation that is commonly found in one particular area of Staffordshire as that may help me find Francis Carter Ball senior's home.  It would be nice to nail that one down!  Can you help with that one please?

Many thanks.  I have the marriage cert.  It's his life before that that I'm interested in.
