My thoughts also, only possibility is if her parents moved into the Warsop area as he was
a Farm Labourer and there were several farms in the area.

I did contact Millie Brownlow (Aunt) who knew about my dad but the only information she had
was that dad's mother's name was Green, no mention of Barker and she had no more information or did not want to give same, or gave me the name Green to throw me off as she was very close to her Father.

All the half siblings have passed on bar one and he has dementia, I contacted his daughter but she did not want to discuss the matter. The only reference to Green and Barker is a marriage in 1914, Edith 21 years, married in  Owlerton, Sheffield, (I have the certificate.

In looking at Edith born 1898 I thought Grayingham, Gainsborough may have been too far away from Warsop?

I did look at Edith 1901 Reigate but thought also it was too far away but might look at this more closely.

I did come across an Edith I Barker c1887 born in Bradford in 1901 Census - aged 14 yrs - residence in Shipley and in 1911 Census it appears she is in Bradford aged 24 yrs, Nursery Governess.  There is a marriage for Edith Irene Barker to Denton in 1927.

Thank you for the information about Dad being able to take the name Brownlow I thought maybe he had to be adopted, but apparently not, that solved one issue for me.l

Extremely hard to find. I may need to go back to Edith who married Denton and try that option.

Because the name is very similar to what is on the Birth Certificate and thought maybe this maybe the right Edith and close to Frank's age, there are so many Edith Barker's it is like a needle in a haystack, so there is no corroborating evidence that this is the right Edith.

I have also tried to find who would have been living at 194 Gleadless Road, Ecclesall Bierlow, where Dad was born in 1916, I know that the Blackwell's were there in 1911(Census)  and checking on Sheffield Index the last Blackwell child listed at Gleadless Road was in 1914, have not been able to check any further.

I know that Frank Senior lived and worked all his life in Warsop, Mansfield he was Miner and later a Colliery Deputy and did not seem to move around so perhaps Edith lived in this area and went away to have the baby.

That's interesting.  On the certificate it has name, if any - Frank Brownlow, boy, blank for name and surname of father and blank for occupation of father, I had assumed (which I know I should never do) that these were his christrian names - his birth is registered as Barker, was really confused how he could then become Brownlow, which he used, not Barker. His death certificate only states Frank Brownlow.

My source for Edith Barker was originally from the 1911 Census, I now have her Birth Certificate,
she was born on the 28/10/1898, named Edith Irene, Father Charles Barker, Mother Elizabeth Hobson. Father was a Farm Labourer and address was Grayingham Grange, Grayingham Gainsborough have tried all ways to track from the certificate and 1911 census but cannot come up with a marriage or death.  Could the name on Dad's certificate could be false?

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I am feeling that this is the Edith I am looking for but I am unable to find any more details on her  marriage or death since the 1911 census and my dad's birth certificate dated 1916.  I did not know that dad was illegitimate until his death and nobody would provide me with any info, other than the fact that Frank Brownlow is his biological father.  The mother's name never came to light until his death, hence his Christian names Frank Brownlow, had a effort finding his birth records as his was listed under Barker, obviously Frank Snr. maybe refused to sign the birth certificate, I was told that  his wife was told on her wedding day that he had a son (bit of a shock),  so all I have is dads birth certificate to run with and the fact that he did go to live with Frank Snr. and wife around 1921, don't know what happened to Edith, did she marry or perhaps die?

Trying to find my paternal grandmother Edith Irene Barker born c1898. my father was born out of wedlock as Frank Brownlow Barker 17th June 1916 at 194 Gleadless Road Sheffield, I have his birth certificate only which states no father or occupation of father, mother Edith Irene Barker a domestic servant address 194 gleadless road Sheffield.

I do know that the father is my grandad Frank Brownlow born 1896 Warsop and lived in this area all his life and I have all of his family records, it is possible that Edith also lived in this area and went away to have the baby.  My father was taken from Edith, I believe around 1921 as not being looked after and lived with grandad into adult hood. I am unable to find any details for marriage or death for Edith since 1916.

I have located an Edith Irene Barker c 1898 Greyingham Lincolnshire and one born in 1886.
As all the family has now passed I have struck a brickwall.
Also is there anyway I can get details of schools that my father may have attended in the Warsop,Mansfield area, and how to find out who lived at 194 Gleadless Road in 1916, I have the Blackwell living there until possibly 1914 but can't get any further.
Any help or suggestion would be most appreciated.  Cathy
