Hi Haywood.
I tried the following, (1871 1281/11 Reading, Oxfordshire Henry Bennett 26 yrs b Hanley , occupation Soldier)   at "The Genealogist" and it came up with nothing even close to what you came up with. Could you please let me have the address if you don't mind and I will try a new search. I had a look at the original page 1871 1281/11 but like I said there were no Bennett's on it. I tried to send you a personal message but you mailbox is full.

Hi Heywood.
You have come to the same conclusion that I have. As you say the age fits as per the marriage certificate but not with the census returns, the name of Arthur and Alfred do occur in later generations and the occupations match.

On the 1851 it lists Henry Bennett born1847, did he then use the Steele name and not Bennett just as William and Rachel's son William Henry Blurton very rarely used the Steele name, (Like father like son).

Thank you for all your help I will enter this into a separate tree and try to prove it. Unless someone else has another idea?

Hi Heywood.
William Henry is listed as a bachelor and his address is given as Swan Passage Hanley. The occupation given for Thomas is Labourer. I have looked at the address on The Genealogist but they show very few houses and I know that there were more than they have listed.

Hi KGarrard.
The William Henry BLURTON on the 1871 was the son of Rachel BLURTON and William Henry STEELE.

He used both the STEELE and BLURTON names. The person that we need is William Henry STEELE his father born 1847 by his marriage certificate or 1842 or 1843 by the census who married Rachel.

Hi and thank you for the quick reply. We had seen this entry before and discounted it, call it a gut feeling if you will. Also the area and occupation do not fit.

My cousin has been to the local records office many times but they can find no trace of a William Henry, Henry or a William the same with his father Thomas Bennett Steele. Could his father have been just plain Thomas Bennett?

We even took on the services of a professional Genealogist, they came up with a family but after checking the information it turned out to be another false trail.

I know how good the members of RootsChat are and I still live in hope that one of them may solve the problem.

Regards Harry
