Did their son Joseph die before 1911 census?

Joseph Daniel Cox age 37 Jun 1908 Wandsworth, London

Yes, that is him.

I have deaths for Edmund, Sarah, Elizabeth Jane, Martha & Arthur. I haven't identified any yet for Ann, John jnr, Frederick William or Robert. I now have a likely death for John sen and Sarah sen thanks to you both, and also the possible death for Thomas age 4.

Two of the girls Martha & Elizabeth Jane Cox married and they can later be found living/died in Bath Somerset - do you have these details?

Yes, Ladyhawk, thank you, I have those details. Elizabeth Jane is my 2 x GGM

For info, regarding the other children:

Son John COX (b 1867) married Clara STRAIN
Son Joseph Daniel COX (b 1870) married Bertha Mary OSMAN
Son Robert COX (b 1878) married (1) Edith Elizabeth CADGE & (2) Augusta FURBER
Son Arthur Herbert COX (b 1887) married (1) Ethel DANSIE & (2) Clarrie Moss FRANCIS

I have nothing for daughter Ann COX (b.1862) past the 1871 census
I have nothing for son Thomas COX (b 1869) past the 1871 census
I have nothing for son Frederick William COX (b 1875) past the 1891 census

With the early deaths of Edmund and Sarah, perhaps these three make up the five children that have apparently died by 1911 but where is the 12th child? Given that they have turned up on no records so far, I would be inclined to say that "missing" child might be one of the five dead??

I definitely need to spend some more time on the deaths and burials to try and confirm.

Sarah Cox is living at 77 Strone Road in the 1911 Census (at least that is what I believe), as a visitor in a household of people I don't recognise. I had thought it was probably a way of being near to her children. I will have a closer look at those death/burials, thank you!

Yes she is at that address in 1911

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWF4-GG1
- added says Sarah married 53 years 12 children 7 living 5 died

Edit to add

Alice married Harry Diegel in 1902

Alice Matilda PENN age 19 father Edwin

The 12 children part was interesting as I have only ever found 11.

As well as being for my own interest and family tree, I am currently focused on my 3 x GGP and family because I am trying to help a DNA cousin identify her unknown Grandfather. He is likely to be the son of one of John and Sarah's sons OR the son of the son of one of John and Sarah's children. I really want to be sure I know who was alive and when, and where they all were, and also that I have all the known children, before I recommend to her where she might need some targeted DNA testing to get some closer matches.

Thanks both for all your help - it is much appreciated.

A+D register says John Cox discharged to Colney Hatch, 9 Oct 1907

That reception order does make for sad reading but thank you so much for finding it - it really fills in the blanks and directly answers why "religious mania".

This is all fabulous - thank you. I had struggled to find his final discharge after being admitted in 1907 so I really appreciate all that information, I will have a good look through. That also answers his whereabouts in the 1911 census so I can bin the "possibles" I have been collecting!

Just as another thought - might be nothing though.

I found an entry for an Ann COX in the Islington Workhouse Records 30 Jan 1881, this Ann is age 19 and had given birth to an illegitimate son William Percy COX. She is listed as a Servant. There are so many Ann COX, servant records in London in the 1881 census that I got a bit overwhelmed yesterday. I will revisit this, though.

I spent quite a bit of time looking at John COX (the father) in the Stepney Board of Guardians Records on Ancestry yesterday as he seems to have been in and out of the Mile End Old Town Workhouse between 1903 and 1907. He was moved to the infirmary a couple of times and in 1907 is moved to the Insane ward, for "Religious Mania". On one of the records he is suddenly described as Baptist where he had been CofE before - does anyone have any insight into whether just claiming to be a Baptist (possibly loudly) would have led authorities to say that someone had "religious mania"?? I am trying to "follow" his life to find the death/burial record. There is a John COX, similar age, in the Stepney Union Workhouse in 1911 but he is described as a General Labourer, rather than a Wood Cutter. I wondered if this might make sense if he had been in the Workhouse since 1907?

Apologies - I feel like I have gone off at a tangent here! My head is spinning with information...

Pretty elusive in 1881  ???

Indeed, but at least we know where they lived for about four years a little while before then!
Not really sure what happened to the first two children, Edmund and Sarah Ann.
Thomas might have died in 1873
March 1873 Holborn 1b 422
Cox, Thomas
Age 4

In the Burial Register for Victoria Park Cemetery, Hackney

Edmund COX age 2 years 10 months, Sidney St Caledonian Road, 25 Nov 1861
Sarah COX age 14 months, Sidney St Caledonian Road, 9 Dec 1961

Edmond COX 1861 Q4 Islington Vol 1b Page 135 (Age 3)
Sarah COX 1861 Q4 Islington Vol 1B Page 148 (Age 1)

So not a happy month for John and Sarah  :(

Hi everyone, I have just seen all these replies - thank you.

I will reply properly in the morning as I am just off to bed - I have the delightful Covid and seem to be very tired all the time at the moment!

Briefly - I have burials for Edmund and Sarah (children) - I will look up the details and post here tomorrow.

I have attempted to look for deaths of Thomas and Ann prior to 1881 but the names are VERY common - I must try harder :)  I have been trying to spend a bit of time on it today and found the 15 Clarence Terrace address but, as you have pointed out, they were not there in 1881.

I have them in 1861 census - I will add the details tomorrow.

I will see what I can find in terms of burials for the Thomas Cox died age 4 - that might be promising. They seemed to move around quite a bit and I find it hard to keep focused on all the different London Districts! Lots and lots of map referencing as I go.

Thank you all again, sorry that I am now popping off!
