Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: James Mottershead
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 20:51 GMT (UK)  »
Further to my previous posts. I have discounted William Mottershead and Elizabeth Weedall as James parents . Their James died as a young child. I have also found the marriage of Elizabeth to a George Myers Hiscocks in 1844. With Samuel Weedall as her father.
I have also come across a strange thing - in 1850 the family appear to be listed twice on different pages and folio in Ancoats
Address 1 = Bengal St - Betsy Mottershead 17( Spinner), Mary Mottershead 15( Spinner) , Wlm Mottershead 13, Thos Mottershead 10, Saml 9, Ann Myers 1. Nr Shilling place and Shilling Court
Address 2 = Bengal - Gee Hescock 28 Wheelwright, Eliza Hescock 29, Eliza Mottershead 17(Spinner), Mary Mottershead 15(Spinner) William Mottershead 13, Thos Mottershead 11, Saml Mottershead 9, Ann Hescock 1 Near Jersey Street. They are also still together in 1850 with another son George. So I'm drawing a blank now. I found the marriage of Elizabeth Mottershead to Edward Dean in 1849 wigh Elizabeths Father with the surname Ogden. Any assistance would be gratefully received.

I have the marriage of Adam Mottershead to Mary Daniels in 1875.

Both Adam and his father James were given as Finishers this is something to do with manufacturing cotton as is the occupation of Callanderer.

I am still unsure as to the year of James Birth though.
According to various Censuses he is 7 in 1841
In 1861 he is 26 and in 1871 he is 45

I think it could be Adam Mabel. I need to find the marriage of his parents to confirm.

Looking for the marriage of a James Mottershead(born Hulme) to Hannah(born Preston) in 1850's. There was a son Adam Spate Mottershead born around 1856 in Manchester.  I cant find any records for him either.
They were in the Hulme area of Manchester in 1861 census with an Elizabeth Dean James was listed as Son. Siblings were George(1860), Harriet(1861), John Thomas (1864) and Robert(1869) None of the siblings appear to have Spate in their name so it is possible that Hannah was married before I cant find any records that match though.

Although John was on Roberts marriage certificate as a Horse dealer on his baptismal certificate he is a Millwright which apparently someone who builds or repairs mills and mill machinery. so I am more perplexed than ever. I would still like to see if I can find any connection to the Presbytarian church.

It could be. I'm still looking for John in any census. One of my uncles started looking at the family tree about 50 years ago and he seemed to think that the family was from Maxwelltown in Wigtownshire but I havent had any luck finding any Roberts from there that fit the age. There was also talk of the family being presbytarians and they fell out with Robert because he married a Catholic girl. His sister also went to live in America and married a Ranch owner. She left money to the family but when the will arrived it was blank we think the family in America didnt want to part with their money. Incidentally Robert signed his marriage certificate with a good signature which I think indicates he must have been educated. Any idea's how I can follow these lines?

HI Bri1gau,

The 1841 census sounds promising the only other Robert I have found in the 1841 census in Scotland was a joiner. If it his my Robert both Ann and Mary Ann must have died before 1850. I have also been trying to find John but havent had much sucess. Margaret could fit in too. Thank you for your help.
