Thank you for looking. As William stated on his census forms later that this was where he was born, I need to think again.

Are the Hadleigh and area registers available on-line?

Regards,
Peter M.

Hi, Thanks for your reply.
Yes, That was me posting on Sunday, but that was I thought a general post, and this a request for help post.

The 1851 census that you have found is correct.
I can't see how to attach the wedding register.
Here is what it says:
1808 #18
William Merchant of this parish
and Sarah Linnet of this parish Widow
Married by banns 23 October 1808
by C.F. Mustard - Curator
in the presence of Susanna ***   and Thomas Burns ( His name appears as witness on most of the weddings on this page.)

In the surname interests table there are a number of Merchants, but all in different areas of the country.
(I'll have to add Marchant to it though)

Thanks for any help.

My 3g grandfather William Merchant 1851 census record says that his place of birth was Hadleigh, Suffolk.

I cannot find any verification of this and don't know where to look. I am unable to travel to Suffolk unfortunately.

I have heard( not verified) that his mother was Dinah Marchant, Daughter of Richard Marchant and Dinah (Bloss) Marchant  born 1853 in Bildeston, who later  in 1771 married Abraham Daking in Semer.

My thanks in advance to anyone who can throw any light on this history.

Peter Merchant
PS It would be nice if one could do a search on Rootschat just on the forum that one is currently looking at, but with a name like Merchant I am getting search results from all over the country, all sorts of records.

Suffolk / Help with Marchant/Merchant family rumour c1771
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 18:21 BST (UK)  »
I have been told, but am unable to verify, that my 3g grandfather, William Marchant, was born c1771 to Dinah Marchant, daughter of Richard and Dinah (Bloss) Marchant. This was in Hadleigh, going by later census declarations.

The rumour has it that the father was a John Steventon.

I cannot find any records of this.

Can anyone help with this.
Thanks,

I have a postcard addressed to my Grandfather at this address in July 1914. Does anybody know  what sort of treatment he would have been having there. He was a shipping clerk at Port of London Tilbury Docks at the time and nearly 30.

Thanks for any information.

Thanks all for your replies. Sorry that it has taken me so long to think about returning here.

In 1851 Sarah Ann was married to John Merchant and living in Grays, Essex. That's why you can't find her.

The other Sarah born/died 1814 was a different family.

Cheers,
Peter

Technical Help / Re: Refining search to Family name
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 20:44 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks everyone. I guess I should have been a bit more specific. I meant for refining the surname search within Rootschat.

You have answered my  question anyway, and I have tried all of your other suggestions. I have long ago found that searching for Peter Merchant in Google finds lots of them, including a number of other university lecturers!

Thank you all,
PM

Technical Help / Refining search to Family name
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
How do I refine the search facility to search for my family name? My Name is 'Merchant' and when I search for that I find a very large number of 'Merchant seaman' and other similar occupations and comments. I am sure that this happens to other names too.

Thanks,
