Hi, thanks for that. I think that things are becoming clearer now. Grayburn and Graburn doesn't help but I'm getting there.

Thanks for the input.  I know he lived in Bethnal Green and his daughtet, my grandmother, was proud of being a Cockney, and he returned to Ireland. He lived in Warrenpoint in 1911.

It is becoming increasingly obvious how much of a mongrel I am!

Looking for any information re William Robert Woods born Cootehill, Cavan, I think, 1844.  His father, Robert, according to marriage records was a farmer.  Strangely, I have silhouette portraits of his unknown grandparents.  William Robert was a postal sorter living and married in Bethnal Green in 1868.

Hi, Thanks for that - you re-ignited my interest and I had another trawl (sorry) through the internet and found this http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66677.html

Clearly my ancestor was braver, or poorer, than me to go fishing on the North Sea in that.

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1871 Census for Thomas Joseph Ashley

Just seen post re Thomas Joseph Ashley who is my 2nd great grandfather. Still trying to unscramble all the details but if it is of any use, have a look at the Beasley-Howe tree an Ancestry. His daughter married Charles Howe. Seems to be a spelling issue - Chatlyn/Chatlen. Hope this helps, if you haven't got there already.

Thanks for all your observations.  Looking again at the certificates I have, proves that I was not very careful in checking the facts in that the Mary Ann Graburn who married George Mann was not my grandmother.  She was, as was pointed out, too young and I have been trying to research the wrong person.

I have the certificate of her marriage to John Thomas Graburn in 1879 where her father is listed as a deceased Labourer, she is also recorded on her daughter Alice's (my grandmother) baptism certificate at Jarrat Street Primitive Methodist Chapel in 1882.

All of which has taught me to check, check and check again rather than rely on the quick method of assumption.

I will certainly look into the Minshull lead.

Again, thanks and have only one more question, are the Patrington registers available on line or on CD?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Mary Ann Soulsby b.1855 Patrington

This elusive lady, my great grandmother, married John Thomas Graburn, was widowed and married George W Mann.  Seems to have been missed by one two census takers.  Does anybody know of her please?

Hi, I'm trying to tap into what must be a wealth of nautical knowledge. My great grandfather, John Graburn from Sculcoates, was indentured 30th December, 1864 and his vessel was a dandy called Fearnot. Living in land-locked Warwickshire, my ship knowledge is not great. So, what was (is) a dandy and are there any illustrations?
