Yes nfmcc I would love to make contact and exchange family details . Have you seen the wedding photo I posted under the title "another photo from the Robert Hard album". It would be amazing if it was Ann Gall. As jet I haven't been able to find out which family member it is getting married. The older couple behind the bride and groom is Thomas and Mary. Look forward to hearing more from you.
Regards Anne

Monica,
Thomas and Mary's children were
George Herd
Robert Herd
Alexander Jamieson Herd
Lachlan Herd
Ann Gall Herd
Mary Grant Herd
Thomas Herd
Isabella Cumming Herd
John Herd
George married and went to England as a police officer, Robert changed his surname and came to Australia (was an artist), Lachlan I believe died at about 22, Alexander married and stayed in the area of his birth, Ann and Mary I know very little about, Thomas married and went to Oregan, USA, Isabella married John Middleton and stayed in the area while John went to New Zealand .
I find it quite strange that all the girls had second names while only Alexander as far as I am aware was given a second name.
Thank you for all the help you have given me. Have followed your link to Geni and seems I may have found more of Alexander's family. So a big thank you
Anne

Rosie, Robert had a sister born in 1854 named Ann Gall Herd who was thought to have married someone with the surname Anderson but that is all I know at this point about her or her husband and family.

Aberdeenshire / Another photo in Robert Herd's album

This photo was also in my great grandfather collection along with many more photos which sadly my grandmother threw away because she didn't know who they were. !! The couple behind the bride I know to be Thomas and Mary Herd and I have to assume either the bride or groom is a son, daughter or perhaps grandchild. Robert doesn't appear to be in this photo as far as I can make out. My hope is that another copy of this photo may have survived in another family and more faces will gain names.
Did family's have an order in which they tended to be placed in photos in those days such as brides family on one side and grooms on another or is that just wishful thinking on my part? The original is in a sepia tone but made the file to large to load so I have changed it to black and white.
Thanks
Anne

You have all been a big help in trying to solve my problem. I had looked on different maps and photo sites and couldn't find the correct configuration of street and kirk. Guess that was my problem as I was only thinking of the building at the end of the street as being a church. I had thought it may have been taken in Old Deer but none of that seemed to match either. Will go back to my photo and try and date match the type of photo. Very thin glossy paper pasted on board. That might be the best way of dating the street. Any ideas on who would have taken photos in this area. Was there a photography studio in Old Deer or would someone travel the district from a larger center.
Cheers

Thanks Monica and flst, I have checked out the valuation files for Thomas and his son Alexander but must admit I hadn't thought to look under Mary Herd. Mary died in March 1902 and Thomas in March 1905 so not sure the listing would be for her but might still be worth me checking.Think from what my grandmother told me Robert returned early in the 1900's  but don't know for sure.
Thanks for your help.

Aberdeenshire / Is this photo taken in Fetterangus

Have been trying to discover for a long time if this photo taken of my gg grandfather Robert Hard was taken in Fetterangus. He was born in 1846 to Thomas and Mary Herd. When only quite young he went to sea changing his surname to Hard and came to Australia sometime in the 1880's. He returned to Scotland at least once when this photo was taken. Thomas was a crofter at Easter Toux (16 acres) and a one stage the family lived in the village of Fetterangus.
Any help on this would be wonderful.

I have a Milne family attached to my family tree and am wondering if your John Milne comes from the same area. My family are from the Old Deer area and as as far back as I have worked them out is the marriage of William Milne and Margaret Udny in 1837. The couple had six children that I know of one of whom , Mary, married Alexander Jamieson Herd who is in my direct blood line.
Cheers Anne
