Cheshire / Re: Egerton Burgess and back to Egerton!
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Wow, many thanks for all your help and input. I certainly agree thats it's going to take some untangling.  I have found 6 Egerton families on the 1841 census in Church Minshull!

Lots for me to think about and research.

My main focus is Anne Egerton c1811 as she appears to be the direct line to follow. But without all the other family members it's hard to be sure if I'm going up the correct line.

The Martha Egerton and Ellen Egerton is another interesting "link" as I have found Martha Egerton aged 35 at Church Minshull Hall on the 1841 census, I think she is a servant. But there is also a Mary Burgess aged 13 aswell.
I'm puzzled why Anne would be named on the baptism record of Maria and James Egerton as a single woman if she wasn't their mother?

Once again many thanks for all your suggestions and help. I really do appreciate it. If there is any other advise that you think might be useful please let me know. I'm hoping to be able to come down to Cheshire ( I live in Scotland ) later this year so maybe a visit to the records office in Chester might be useful? Any tips on what I should be looking for there?

Thanks.
Lynn

Cheshire / Egerton Burgess and back to Egerton!
« on: Tuesday 18 September 18 20:45 BST (UK)  »
Thanks to a message/hint on Roots Chat from another member I have been following a branch of my family but have come to a halt and one that I'm not sure I can get round. I'm hoping that the experts on here can maybe give me some pointers:

Emily Egerton b1906 Halton Lodge Cottages. Father Fred Egerton Mother Mary Ellen Cooper.

Fred Egerton c1868 Woodhouses Frodsham. Father James Egerton Mother Sarah Littlemore

James Egerton c1832 Swanlow Lane Winsford. Mother Anne Egerton "single woman" on baptism record.  Also his sister Maria Egerton c1830 again mother Anne Egerton "single woman" on baptism record.

Anne Egerton c1811 possibly Church Minshull.

Anne Egerton married a John Burgess  30th December 1835 in Church Minshull. Witnesses were a Charles Egerton and a John Briscall. No other details on the parish register ie fathers names or professions.
I have found Anne Burgess nee Egerton living in Church Minshull with her husband John and 3 of the children named as Egertons and 4 named as Burgess on the 1841 census.
I'm having problems tracking them after this census.  This is where I need help and would appreciate any pointers.

Just a wee bit of background on the family.......
On the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census my GG Grandfather James Egerton was named as Burgess, this was when he was living in Frodsham. When he married Sarah Littlemore in 1859 he used the name Egerton.  My G Grandfather Fred Egerton was named as Burgess on the 1871 and 1881 census but again he used the name Egerton when he married Mary Ellen Cooper in 1892. My grandmother, Emily Egerton was always named as an Egerton as were all her brothers and sisters.

My thoughts are that James Egerton was born out of wedlock, father unknown as there is no name of a father on his baptism record?
I am going to have a difficult time finding out who Anne Egertons father/family were? Is this where this branch ends?
Sorry if I haven't explained things too well, I tend to get myself tied in knots! Thanks for reading.

Lancashire / Re: Zachariah Kent
« on: Tuesday 17 July 18 10:05 BST (UK)  »
Thanks everyone for all the input, I really do appreciate it.

The spelling of Zachariahs name seems to change with every document. His marriage certificate is spelt Zechariah and his name was spelt Zacharais at his death.

He isn't named as a lodger with the Spruce family in 1891 nor with any of his siblings as far as I can see.

The children of Zachariah and Elizabeth (nee Spruce) were:
Frank born 1894
Hannah 1896 ( my husbands grandmother )
Elizabeth 1899
Lilian 1901
Sarah 1903
John William 1905
Louie 1908

I think the other Zacharias mentioned by Garstonite is the son of Harry Kent who was the brother of my Zachariah. Their parents were John Kent and Hannah Nixon from Tunstall Staffs.

I haven't got access to military records on my present subscription. I might have to wait until I can upgrade.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Lancashire / Zachariah Kent
« on: Monday 16 July 18 14:04 BST (UK)  »
I'm struggling to find Zachariah on the 1891 census. He is on the 1881 and 1901 census but I've tried all different combinations of looking for him. Different spellings of his name, maybe with brothers or sisters etc etc........all to no avail.

He was born 10th May 1873 in Tunstall Staffs but appears for the first time on the 1881 census in Warrington living with his father and siblings. He then stays around Warrington for the rest of his life until his death in 1948. He was my husbands great grandfather.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks ever so much.

Lancashire / Re: Happy Smith

Thanks for all your thoughts. I really do appreciate it as I'm a bit of a novice doing this kind of thing.

I have the certified copies of the marriage certificates and the signatures of the name "Happy" are the same. I asked other members of my family what they thought and they agree. There are a few distinctive swirls and curls on certain letters.

I expect I'll never know for sure exactly what happened to her first husband. Information I have gained from census, parish records etc have been confirmed when my friend has asked her elderly mum things. It's been really good as my friend says it's been good getting her mum chatting about her past and remembering things. We've put questions in a way as not to lead her, rather let her come out with names etc.

I'll certainly check out the birth and death of a possible baby for Happy and John Hughes.

Many thanks and any more thoughts etc are always welcome.

I now have more information but I still have one big question. Funny how that always seems to happen lol. I really would like to know what happened to Happy's first husband John Edward Hughes.

I have got both marriage certificates for Happy Smith/Hughes and there are some anomalies. I wonder if some of you more experienced folk might have a look at the info and give me your thoughts? I'd be very grateful. This is what I have so far.

29th August 1908. Wigan Register Office.
Happy Smith age 24 Spinster Bolton Road Ashton in Makerfield.
Father John Smith. Foreman at Iron Foundry.

John Edward Hughes age 21 Bachelor Pawn Brokers Assistant. Old Road Ashton in Makerfield.
Father George Hughes Stone Mason ( journeyman)

Witnesses: John Roberts and Catherine Anne Roberts. ( I have found a marriage for a Catherine Anne Hughes and John Roberts 1899 Wigan in BMD. Register office or registrar attended)

14th December 1911 The register Office Warrington
Happy Hughes age 22 Spinster Laundress County Asylum Winwick
Father John Hughes Commercial Traveller

James Rowles age 21 Bachelor Stoker at Waterworks. Middleton Waterworks Warrington.
Father James Rowles Stoker at Waterworks.

Witnesses Aaron Brimelow and Fanny Brimelow ( Fanny Rowles sister of James married Aaron Brimelow)

I am sure looking at the signature on both certificates that Happy is one and the same.  What happened to John Edward Hughes after 1908?
I can find him on the 1901 Census, named as John Hughes. He was born in Llanasa Wales. I also have him in 1891 census living in Llanasa. But can't find him in 1911. Maybe I'm just missing whats in front of me.

Many thanks for any thoughts and help.

Thank you all so much. Certainly lots to look at and hopefully find out more about Happy's life.

Her name intrigues me so much that I have put my own tree to one side for now!
