my thoughts were for them to be more WW1 date too.

Trying to research Samuel Cox b1878 in shoreditch.
Are these photos from the Boer war or WW1, and which regiment he was in?
Having trouble to find records for him.

In the large group photo he is bottom, 5th from left.

In the photo with the rabbits he is the man caring the buckets.

Any information really appreciated!

Afraid I can't help as to where this is.  But, I wonder what the small pieces of paper they are holding are for.   Do you know?

Could they be collecting their demob outfits?  In which case it would be local to where he lived.

Someone else just suggested it could be demob, and/or near a demob center, i guess thats another thing to look into now!

World War Two / after the war - demobilisation centers london
« on: Tuesday 15 December 15 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all!

I was wondering if there is a list somewhere, or a place I can find out the places that were active demobilisation centers as WW2 ended in London?

Thanks
Emma :o

If we have the right place then your grandad is standing outside and facing the Shooting Star pub.

The only thing im not so sure about, is the pub on the corner, it looks very different, obviously it may have had a facial refit. But i dont think it looks like a pub in my photo.

Thanks it looks good, i guess next step would be to see if that street used to run a bus service?
Yes, good idea, as there is a bus stop in the background. It's a red stop so you should check if buses ran down the possible streets you have. It is likely, in the '50s, that many bus services travelled that way as it has always been a predominantly poor + working class area so doubt people had cars.

According to this 1952 map route 78 stopped on this street: http://www.busmap.co.uk/Downloads/Sales/Historical/1952%20Greater%20London%20Bus%20Map.pdf

Its the most convincing location I have so far. I think i will check directory for the building either side of 'Davant' next to it to see if they match up.

This is the Middlesex Street location on Streetview. Number 124 has been rebuilt but the building next door looks right https://goo.gl/maps/HftvsYha2vv

I've posted the photo in that forum and they are not sure sure it is East Ham.

Unfortunately I have no idea about this, but it could be something like that.

Its my grandad in this photo Arthur Jenner b1926 in Shoreditch, married in 1957 in Hoxton.
No longer around but he grew up in the shoreditch and bethnal green areas.

I've done a good search on the name 'Davant' for the shop behind but cant find anything substantial.
One address comes up but it doesn't look like the same area from the photo.
