Staffordshire / Burntwood Asylum
« on: Tuesday 02 June 15 10:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi I know this is a big ask but does anyone regularly visit Staffordshire records office who could do me a quick look up for me in the Burntwood Asylum Records

I am looking for a Harriet Clarke that was admitted around 1866 and stayed there until the 5th September 1871.

Unfortunately I have only two weeks left before the deadline on a book I am writing for an exhibition so I have no time to visit myself so any help given would be fantastic.

I live in Hertfordshire and regularly visit  Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire archives so I am happy to return the favour if I can.

Thank You

Oh I am sorry about that I haven't been on here for ages and I know we used to do it all the time, I did not realise the rules have changed.

Unfortunately the two sites you recommended are no good at all

Apologies again

United States of America / Joseph Kirby Look Up Please (edited)
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 09:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi I wonder if someone might be able to look up Joseph Kirby, passenger list for New York 1850, he was born 1822 in St Neots Hunts, I believe he would have travelled to New York around 1850

I have found out from his Bethlem Hospital records that he was in America at least 2 years previous to his being admitted to the hospital. Someone has given me details of a Joseph Kirby being in Brooklyn and working as a carpenter in 1850.

I am hoping this could be my chappie and that it may contain a bit more information for me to link it all together

Thanks in advance for any help given

Armed Forces / Army Reserves Duke of Cornwalls light infantry

Hi I am researching the history of this Gentleman Alfred Knight. I am trying to find his whereabouts from 1891-1894. I cannot find him in the 1891 census. By looking at his records where he was stops in 87 and then it says he was in the reserves ....can anyone explain to me what that really means would he still be employed by the army and with a battalion somewhere or could he have a regular job but just be called up if needed......

Sorry if this seems a stupid question but it get really confused with all this military stuff I just really need to find this chappie somewhere between 91 and 94

Thank you in advance for any help that may be given

Armed Forces / Grenadier Guards 1837-1852
« on: Thursday 21 March 13 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I am researching a soldier Robert Powell who enlisted at Gosmore the 25th March 1837 into the Grenadier Guards. From his records, Census documents and Pay and Muster books it seems he was with the 1st Batt 10 Co.....

in 1841 he is at the Tower of London and 1851 at Windsor Barracks.

It seems he was a good soldier until 1847 when he went absent for 6 days and ended up being imprisoned for 35 days at a district or provost? Prison.

He was discharged in 1852 with no pension or money for travel, he was described as being irregular but in every other way a good soldier.

I have lots of research into Roberts life after he was discharged but i have no understanding of what his life would of been like while in the Army.

- What would have been his duties, uniform
- would he have been involved in any wars between 1837-1852
- I know from later documents that Roberts had caught Syphilus ... were there any military hospitals at that time or if he was hospitalised would it have been a normal hospital.

any information given regarding the life of a grenadier guard would be brilliant or if u can point me in the right direction to finding info that would be great also.

Thanks in advance for any help given

Hi,
They didn't marry until 18th September 1916. Agnes had married a John Bloodworth in 1891 and I'm presuming they split up and she had to wait until he died before she could marry Alfred

I also found those army records and could find nothing for Millicent it is a mystery to me the nearest I could find was a Robert Alfred born to a Robert but don't think that works .

Thank you for your time looking

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Lost before 1901 census??
« on: Sunday 11 November 12 08:39 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help....

I have just received the marriage certificate for Alfred Knight.

It states he was 50 widower a leading stoker at the Electric Light Works living in hammersmith and his father deceased was Robert Knight a farmer.

In the 1911 census he is living with Agnes and is listed as being born 1863 born in Aylesbury Bucks.

In the 1901 census he is living with Agnes and is listed as being born 1862 born in Aylesbury Bucks

I've done a search for the census from 1891 backwards and don't seem to be able to find him .... I've tried different name variants ... I've found one which is close but the parents names don't match up.

Any ideas.......

Thanks in advance for any advice given

Hi Stan before the certificate starts on the outside I would of imagined it was in the margin of the original book
