This thread was originally mine and I remember the stone steps too. Do you remember the little shops on the terrace? There was a watchmenders, a UCP Tripe shop and a few others I can't recall. I used to cycle down George St every day on my way home from The Grammar School at the top of the Downs.

I've just read one of my earlier posts on this topic about the Station Buildings. They have been renovated at last and they really do look much better. It's a pity the rest of the town is such a dreary mess. Altrincham was always considered the 'Jewel in the Crown' of the South Manchester area, but they gave it all away when the Council allowed the Trafford Centre to be built a few miles away!

The Common Room / Re: Help me find Granddad!

Further to my previous query (and help from other users) I have the birth cert of my Granddad showing his birth in Walton Gaol. The birthplace is designated USD which I know is Urban Sanitary District. Is this usual for a prison? I assume that his mother was an inmate although I haven't been able to confirm this absolutely 'cos of the lack of available records from Walton.

The Common Room / Help me find Granddad!

I am not new to FH, having been working on both my husband's and my families for a few years now, but I have never been able to find my Granddad Thomas Murray's birth record. He was born in 1882 and in all census returns his birthplace is given as Southport. Their records are part of the Ormskirk Registration District, but there is no trace. In 1881 the family was living in North Meols which is just outside Southport and in the same Ormskirk district, but by the 1891 census they had moved back to Altrincham in Cheshire where his mother was born, and Granddad's name is given as John T or John J? His father has disappeared from the family and is difficult to trace as his name alternates between Walter, Daniel or sometimes both.
Granddad's Military records are also very elusive and I am at my wits end. If I didn't remember him from my childhood, I would be thinking he never existed!

Has anyone any ideas about where else I could look? Parish Registers haven't turned up anything either

Dumfriesshire / Re: Little of Hoddom/Ecclefechan

My husband's family Little came from Kirkpatrick Juxta which is a parish, now defunct, fairly near to Ecclefechan. It is in the Beattock area, we visited it a few years ago and went to the local Kirk and graveyard, It was just stuffed with Littles, so many that we had to photograph them all and go home to research them. It seems that the whole area is full of Littles and they all seem to have the same forenames and seem to have intermarried at will.

I hope I haven't put you off, but you have to persevere and keep your generations and marriages clear in your head!

I have discovered that two ancestors of the Little family died in Jamaica in the early 1800s. One was resident at Crescent, St Catherine, and the other at Bellfield, St Catherine. The information is on their gravestones in their home village of Kirkpatrick Juxta in Dumfriesshire.

Does anyone know anything about emigration to Jamaica by young Scottish men? They were living on a small farm, probably not much more than a smallholding so I am aware that lack of employment could have been the reason, but I would love to know what their experience in Jamaica would have been like. Also, were Crescent and Bellfield plantations or just districts of Jamaica?

Am I the only person who thinks the last series was possibly the best since the novelty of the first one?  The stories of runaway spouses and bigamous marriages were interesting and quite surprising. Recently they had become very narrow and rather boring, and the American ones were a real disappointment. How many times can you hear Wow! and Amazing! Sarah Jessica Parker seemed completely overwhelmed that she actually had any ancestors at all.

Geoff,

It's just great to hear from you who knew Dad so well. I was only about 24 when he died, and I missed him so much for many years. I always felt sad that he never knew my children, although he did see me get married in 1967.

Do you still live locally, or if not, have you been to Altrincham recently? I live in Sale now, and if Mum & Dad saw what they've done to Alty, they'd be horrified. I look at the Trafford website, at the old pictures and it's amazing what memories it brings back. It's a really good resource for local historians.

Hi, Geoff,

How great to hear from someone who knew my lovely Dad! He used to tell us stories about his apprentices too. Do you remember one called Trevor Clark? he was my boyfriend whilst he was working with my Dad, and was terrified of upsetting him. Dad used to pretend he was rubbish  just to annoy me.
