London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Alfred and William Slater

Thanks that seems to match up!

I missed George as a brother on the army records.

The thing that confuses me is why is Alfred's father named as William on his marriage certificate if his name was George on the census?  Is that common?

Trying to find info on William Slater (dob unknown) and Alfred Slater (1863) b hoxton/Clapton Middlesex as a child.

Alfred joined the army in 1877 age 14 from Hackney and left in 1898. Just before he left he was based at York, where I assume he might his wife to be as they married in Nov 1898 in York (Maggie Horsman).

On Alfred's army records he lists a brother Henry and sisters ellen and Maria as next of kin.
His father on the marriage certificate in 1898 is William slater (deceased) who was a cabinet maker.

I don't know when or where William died and I can't seem t find a birth record or 1871 census record for Alfred.

Thanks for any help.

Just an update! I found out that Alfred Slater joined the army as a boy in 1877 in Aldershot as a musician, listing his address as Hackney.  Looking at his records he lists his next of kin an Ellen (I can't remember the other names off the top of my head).  He ended up in York barracks in the 1890s where I presume he met his wife as he married shortly after leaving the army. Still no nearer to finding his father and family though!

It's definitely a possibility! I did look at the 1871 census and wonder if the Mrs Slater was a relative as I figured out Matthew was probably a brother to Mrs Nott.
There's also the chance William was a middle name that he was known by.  I know my G Grandad, George Alfred did that, he was always known as Alfred after he was born.
Thank you all for your help  :)

He was listed as a bachelor.  I did wonder if he had stayed with relatives e.g. as with the Notts. Thanks for looking.

Only the marriage certificate. Those census results from 1901 and 1911 are the ones I have.  I only knew about Alfred from my Grandad.  We only found out about William from the marriage certificate.

OK the witnesses were George Adams and Margaret Headley. And William's profession was actually listed as Cabinet Maker (not sure where packing case maker came from - might have been one of my many attempts to find him in the census records).

Thanks

Hi Maureen

I do have the marriage certificate for Alfred and Maggie. I will see who the witnesses were, hopefully it might help.
I do feel a bit better knowing it's not just me struggling with this one!

Thanks
Stephanie

Wondered if anyone can help me.  I'm looking for information on William Slater, the father of my G.G.Grandad Alfred Slater.

The only information I have is from the marriage certificate of Alfred when he married Maggie Horsman in York in 1898.  In 1898 William was deceased, his occupation was listed as a Packing Case Maker?

In the 1901 and 1911 census Alfred is listed as being born c1866 in Clapton, London and Hoxton, London.  I have no idea how Alfred ended up in York, if William was actually from London/Middlesex or if he went with Alfred to York.

Have I hit a dead end?  Would be greatful for any help!

Thanks
