Tipperary / Death Information for Ancestor B. Shiel
« on: Sunday 04 February 24 22:37 GMT (UK)  »
Good Day,

I was hoping for some help and any advice will be appreciated. My 3x Great Grandfather, Brabazon Disney Shiel dies 20 January 1855 in Blackrock, Dundalk, Louth. The only information I could find was a vague line in a Belfast newspaper. However when I ran his name of FindMyPast-Uk an entry comes up from the "Tipperary Clans Archive" advising B. Shiel 1855, January 20, Blackrock, Dundalk, Louth-Parish Burial.
My question is can I get access on-line to this Tipperary clans Archive to see if it provides where he was buried or any other information about his passing?

Thank you in advance from chilly Canada

Sorry for responding late but was ill these past few days. I had reviewed all the previous information that was provided to me. I was hoping maybe somebody who lived near the area of Drumbin Road could pin point exactly where it was in Co. Monaghan. Every map I look at I can't locate so was wondering it could be a road that doesn't exist anymore.  Will keep searching but grateful for the help I always receive from here.

Cheers.

Monaghan / Drumbin Road- What townland
« on: Saturday 04 November 23 02:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Can anyone advise what town land Drumbin Road would have been? A Great Aunt died in 1947 and on the death record it gave the address of Drumbin Road, Monaghan. This lady was a spinster who lived all her life in the Rafeenan area and I would like to see if she owned her home at the time of her death or if any other relatives lived with her or near her.

Also, I'm trying to see if my ancestors who lived in Monaghan may have travelled to Scotland to do farm labour during the off season in Ireland. Can anyone advise what areas in Scotland the men from Co. Monaghan may have travelled to for farm labour  so I could connect them to settling in Monaghan.  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for now.

Monaghan / Connecting Grahams to Grahams
« on: Friday 14 July 23 15:44 BST (UK)  »
I have done extensive research on my Graham ancestors. Two brothers (including my 2xGG) married 2 sisters. Thomas (2xGG) married Elizabeth Martin. Robert married Martha Martin. Their father was Andrew. After the sister's Father died, their Mother and 4 brothers left Ireland for America. I have finished with that part of my tree.

I followed Robert Graham and Martha as they left Monaghan for Belfast and had great success with that part of the tree.

My frustration is with my 2xGG Thomas and Elizabeth. They married in 1842 and had a son in 1843 while living in Tullygoney and then I find them in Rafeenan where they had more children and stayed living in Rafeenan until their deaths, Thomas is 1882 and Elizabeth in 1892.

On Griffiths valuation both for Tullygoney and Rafeenan I found a Thomas and Robert renting a house with no land for 5 shillings.  It appears they were "labourers" and assume very poor. Robert leave for Belfast in the 1870's, my Thomas stays all his life there with his wife Elizabeth.

All around them either in Drumcoo Jackson, Killycreen there are Grahams who did have land and as the years went by, did very well in farming, breeding cattle etc. The ones that passed away in the early 1900's I found obituaries where everyone is listed who attended, but not my Thomas Graham.

My question is could they have been related and just worked on a brother's farm as labour, therefore didn't need land just a house to live in? Could they have not been related even though there are so many Grahams living all around them? Is there anything else I can do to try and link all these Grahams? I have just done areas close to Tullygoney and Rafeenan where other Grahams lived. Drumcoo Jackson, Killycreen. I also looked at the custom of naming children.

They stayed all their lives in the Rafeenan area as well their oldest son Robert and a daughter who had a son Richard out of wedlock and was living on Drumbin Road up to 1940 when she passed.

I have done Tithe's Applotment, Griffiths, census, newspaper articles, church records for the children's baptisms and just would really like to find something out about them before giving up. I hope they weren't so poor that they couldn't even have a small patch of land to grow food for themselves.

I am curious about opinions or other options to check out and any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Monaghan / Help to Access Obituary-Northern Standard Newspaper
« on: Monday 03 July 23 22:33 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody advise how I can view 3 obituaries for 3 ancestors that according to the Monaghan Library appear in the Northern Standard. When I try ancestry, Find My Past and British newspaper archives the dates are not available to view on-line or that paper is not available for viewing. I am from Canada, so not sure what to do next.

William Graham- - appeared on page 74 of Norther Standard on 5 Feb 1937
Nathaniel Graham- appeared on pages 245 & 250 as above on 11 August 1939
Jane Graham- appeared on page 473 as above on 13 August 1898.

Any suggestions I would greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance,

S. Graham

Canada / Re: Adamson/Rodgers connection?
« on: Friday 11 November 22 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
Wow, you ladies are great and I have written a to do list to see if we get lucky. Starting with inquire about the hospital in NY state to see if records were kept to find out why Daniel P. Adamson, 4years was there in 1880. Next Dr. Augustus J.T. Giraud I want to check him out. Wouldn't it be something if he worked at that hospital and like Lisa said gave her a job as his housekeeper!!! Did the Millers emigrate to the US. Could there have been a Roland ? that Jemima met through her brother from working in the printing business?
Finally adding the middle name of Patterson which is usually the maiden name of the Mother, if Jemima's father remarried this Helen in 1853, then dies in 1854 a year later, it seems all the children have left home or are living with siblings. To give your son your step-mother's maiden name is a big deal so why not Jemima's own Mother's maiden name of Rogers or Rodgers!!!

The only information that my 4-6th cousin??? tells me is that he has researched for years, with some information being passed down the family via Jemima. He is very keen on linking my ancestors Grahams to his tree since this DNA hit came back showing us as possible connections as 4-6th cousins.  My Grahams I have traced in Co. Monaghan, Ireland but the name I'm sure is Ulster Scots since my DNA has changed over the years percentage wise telling me know I am 73% Scots and 6 % Irish and that does my head in since I can't grasp DNA.

I will work on some things and again thank you for all your time and information. You are both the best.
Sincerely,
Susan

I am so sorry for my late response. All your hard work is amazing and I'm trying to absorb all this information. This gentleman I am trying to help is 90 years old and through DNA which I don't understand at all we are 4-6th cousins. As well as helping him I'm trying to find our connection but not sure how to go about this. He has tried for years to find out the name of his Great Grandfather. I found a social security number for the US for his Grandfather Daniel P. Adamson where his Father's name is listed as Roland H. Adamson and his Mother Jemima Rodgers. At first I thought okay here is his Great Grandfather's name, let's find him. On US census reports it states his Father (Roland) was Canadian, but I couldn't find a DOB or where in Canada he was supposedly born.

I was advised by this gentleman, that Jemima arrived from Scotland in 1873 arriving in New York. While in New York she met Rolland Adamson, a printer and married him.  Rolland died before Daniel Patterson Adamson was born on 11 Nov 1876. Jemima also advised Rolland was Canadian of Scottish decent.

So from 1873 to 1876 is when I want to look for a marriage record if in fact they did marry. What year did Rolland emigrate from Canada to the US and when and where did he die if they were still in NY.
As one person mentioned it is possible there was no marriage and the circumstances of Jemima's pregnancy may have not been a pleasant experience.

I did find a 1880 census from Co. Richmond NY, Staten Island that was a Nursery & Children's Hospital with a long list of children's names. There is a Daniel P. Adamson 4 years so I'm wondering if if was abandoned as Jemima couldn't look after him.

Thank you everyone for you hard work and time spent helping me. You are so kind and it is very much appreciated. If anyone knows where I can find a "understanding DNA for dummies" version out there please suggest as I need to see how my ancestors are connected to his and maybe that will help us solve this mystery.

Again sincerest thanks,
