Kirkcudbrightshire / Re: McEwin & Stevenson.....
« on: Tuesday 25 April 17 10:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi Gadget,
Thanks for looking in to this for me - really appreciated  :)
Yes - Grizel STEVENSON was the sister of the Jean & Margaret I mentioned, and she married Robert Trotter.....so yes, that's the connection.
They also had a brother William, who was a Captain involved in the American War of Independence. I have oodles of info about the Trotters and Grizel, including the MI's you have referred to. I also have a considerable amount of info about the STEVENSON ancestry - so even though I don't know if it was Jean or Margaret that married the McEWIN, I can certainly trace backwards from them.

My real challenge is the McEWIN line - and I'm hoping if I can find the STEVENSON - McEWIN link, I'll be able to go back further with the McEWIN's.

A number of John McEWINs children were born at Balcary in Rerrick, so there is definitely a link there as well.

If you have any other ideas, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks so much again for replying  :)

Cheers,
Terri

Kirkcudbrightshire / McEwin & Stevenson.....
« on: Tuesday 25 April 17 04:15 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor John McEWIN emigrated to Australia with his wife (Margaret Hester Daniel) and some of their children in 1839. His eldest son George McEWIN had emigrated the year before.

In "East Galloway Sketches" by Dr Alexander Trotter (1901), Dr Trotter refers to this family very specifically (he has knowledge of George's activities in South Australia), and states that the father of John McEWIN "married a STEVENSON of New Galloway". The McEWINs were living in Auchencairn in KKD.
Based on other research, I am very confident that this STEVENSON is either Jean or Margaret, both daughters of Thomas STEVENSON who is a descendant of John STEVENSON of Barbeth, the famous Covenanter.

So....I am trying to discover which STEVENSON it was, and what the name of John's father was (Trotter refers to him as Mr McEwen).
I have scoured the OPR's with absolutely no luck at all. From various shipping records and his death certificate, it seems John McEWIN was born around 1796. Jean STEVENSON was born in 1767 and Margaret in 1764 - both in Dalry.

I have thoroughly researched the McEWIN families in Australia (and happy to share info with anyone who is interested), and now I am trying to discover more about their Scottish roots.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Susan Isabel Skyner (Kennedy)

Hi Janelle,
If you are still looking in to this, I can help with the connection between Kennedy and McEwins of Glen Ewin. George McEwin's wife was Jessie Kennedy, and although I have never been able to find out much about her, I'm now assuming she is related to your Kennedy who cam out on the Monsoon. I'm descended from George's brother Andrew.
Let me know if you'd like more info, and I would be happy to share.
Cheers,
Terri

Hi Diana,
You must be a descendant of Edna Scambler!!! I too have a transcript of the extracts of that bible, and have been searching for the original for years!
I have oodles of info about the McEwins and would be very happy to share. I've been researching them for years. I'm descended from Andrew.
Feel free to PM me if you'd like to connect offline.
Cheers,
Terri

Thank you!
Interesting about the 2 churches......perhaps there were additional siblings between Mary (1808) and Daniel (1817) and their baptisms "got lost" as the Irish church began operating.
Yes - the May who married into the Bright family is this Mary b. 1808. She's my ancestor.
May I ask where you found the Jersey archive entries? Was it online somewhere? And what actual record was it - a hospital register? I'd like to be able to reference it correctly.

Cheers,
Teresa

Dumfriesshire / birth of Jessie KENNEDY in Dumfriesshire, 1810
« on: Wednesday 23 December 15 01:53 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to locate the birth of Jessie KENNEDY, who according to her tombstone in Adelaide, South Australia, was born on 12 July 1810 in Dumfries.
She married George McEwin on 20th November 1838 in Liverpool in the Scotch Church in Mount Pleasant, and the certificate gives her father's name as Robert, a road contractor. Witnesses to the marriage were Isabella Little and William Alexander.
George and Jessie used the Scottish naming traditions with their children, and named their first daughter Mary Bartlett.
George and Jessie emigrated to Australia in 1839. George was a gardener.
I have searched Scotland's People, Ancestry, Family Search, FreeReg and Find My Past for both Jessie's birth/baptism and a marriage for Robert Kennedy, with no success.
Although George & Jessie had left Liverpool before 1841, I have searched the 1841 census for a Robert & Mary Kennedy with no success.
As far as I know, none of Jessie's siblings (if she had any) emigrated to Australia. All of George's did, along with his parents.

If any one has any information about Jessie, or any suggestions for what I might try next, I would be most grateful  :)

Cheers,
Terri

Devon / Re: Robert BRIGHT in Devonshire....and maybe Dorset?
« on: Tuesday 22 December 15 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
Yes - Ann married Richard Sanders and had 4 children - Grace, John Mary & Richard. Richard died in 1836, leaving Ann a widow. She and her son Richard lodged with Taylor family in 1841. In 1851 she was lodging with the Luxton family , and in 1861 was living in the Town Alms house with a number of fellow widows.

@Lizzie - interesting story  :). I've also learned not to trust everthing I read.....but in this case at least it lead me in the right direction. Just lucky this time  ;)

Looks like I may have to give up on ever finding Robert Jnr's birth in Weymouth....or wherever he was born  :)
Thanks everyone for the help though.....

Merry Christmas from down under  8)
