Nottinghamshire / Nottingham Archdeaconry wills - browse on FamilySearch
« on: Saturday 25 February 17 22:05 GMT (UK)  »
By chance I discovered today that many of the Archdeaconry of Nottingham will films at FamilySearch have been recently digitised. It includes the deaneries of Retford, Newark, Nottingham and Bingham. You can browse through the wills from the comfort of your home. See https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/556524 and click on any of the little camera symbols.

You have to browse through the films, making it a bit of a pain to find an individual one - but well worth the effort. They are organised by year and date they were proved. It's easiest to search NAWCAT first to see if there's a will of interest, then check to see if the relevant Deanery and year has been digitised yet. Wills in this collection will have the reference PR/NW. Hopefully the films that haven't been digitised will be done soon.

The Common Room / Re: 1939 register - closing an open identity

FindMyPast sent me a kind response and closed the record of my living relative even though I did not have any documentation. Obviously the system is not perfect, but they do a good job with the funds and capabilities they have. In an ideal world, they would have someone researching every individual to determine whether they are living or not, but the cost of that would have to be passed on to the customer, and I suspect would make the venture not worth the risk.

Just as a point of reference, the 1940 US census was released in full years ago, which contains details of living people.

Thanks Harry, your post last year was one of the things I read yesterday as part of my research - but the link you put to the 1931 census reports no longer seems to work?

The Histpop website is very temperamental. Some days it works and some days it doesn't, I'm not quite sure why. It was working 2 days ago, so should be back at some point if you keep checking.

I had a similar question and asked about it here: Determining the area covered by an Enumeration District (ED) on the 1939 Register?

It still isn't completely answered so I look forward to seeing other suggestions people may have. Fortunately with more entries being opened there are more addresses visible in the left hand column, which makes it a bit easier to determine the location.

As far as I am aware, the Registration district and subdistrict are the same as those used for civil registration and census purposes, however subdistricts could be spread over multiple enumeration districts. Rural districts were not the same as Registration districts, though they often shared names. You can take a look at Vision of Britain to get an idea of how complex these geographies were.

I have a very much living 90 year old great aunt whose record has been opened, I have enquired from FindMyPast why. I could understand that with common names, entries for multiple people with the same name and birthdate could get opened incorrectly, but the individual in question has a very unusual name. In the latest batches of opened records it certainly seems there are a few bugs in FindMyPast's algorithm for opening records.

The Common Room / Re: Unusual forename ?

Emeny/Eman/Emonie/Imanie/Ismene was a female given name used in the medieval period.

My other thought is that it could be a corruption of the name Hermione, popularized by Shakespeare.

You might find other ideas browsing the Oxford Dictionary of First Names, available online here (your library may subscribe):

The Common Room / Re: Searching the new GRO indexes - share your tips!

While you cannot search by county specifically, you can add a volume number, which roughly correlates with the registration counties. A listing of volume to county numbers is here:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/civreg/GROIndexes

For example if I want to narrow my search to Nottinghamshire in the 1840s, I can just add volume 15 into the search. This will also bring up some districts in Leics/Northants/Rutland as well, but narrows the results a lot to the region of interest.

It looks like this page is missing from the index. None of the other individuals on this page appear in the new index either.

The Common Room / Re: Find My Past offers

You can only usually get a £1 offer once, otherwise people could have access to the site for the whole year for £12, which obviously would not be sustainable for FindMyPast.
