Midlothian / Re: Non Conformist Records, Dalkeith

I'm used to the terminology my Californian cousin addresses that branch of her family tree with.
From the point of view of the Church of England, every Christian denomination in Scotland is equivalent to nonconformist except the Roman Catholic and Episcopalian churches. So it's not only irrelevant, it isn't even useful to apply it erroneously.  ;)

Wow, just wow.  I have dyslexia and if that's the terminology my cousins family notes referred to it from the 19th century then do please excuse the both of us.

As stated, this is a learning curve for me and I don't appreciate your turn of phrase. There's pointing out somebody's misinterpretation surely in a kinder fashion?

Don't waste my time or yours any further with a response. I shall not be back.

And to all the others who were so helpful, I do appreciate all your responses and tips.  All the best to you all.

According to Diane Baptie's Registers of the Secession Churches in Scotland, there is a baptismal register of Dalkeith West United Presbyterian Church starting in 1839, but nothing else that matches your dates.

PS the term 'non-conformist' is not relevant in Scotland. A non-conformist is by definition a protestant denomination which does not conform with the established Church of England. The C of E is not 'established' in Scotland so the term has no meaning in relation to religious denominations in Scotland.

Thank you for the clarification Forfarian. I'm used to the terminology my Californian cousin addresses that branch of her family tree with.  I've been exceedingly lucky with my own family falling into CofS and a handful of Roman Catholics.  This is a learning curve for me also.  It will be interesting to see a record or two of their religion.

Hi
Have a look at ScotlandsPeople "church registers" other churches
Yours Aye
BruceL

Cheers for that Bruce, I hadn't noticed those on Scotlandspeople. Can't see her relatives though.  Most of Alexanders kids I found in the Church of Scotland records, but I'm convinced they had more, once NC.

I've emailed the Midlothian local studies and as my cousin to check the Edinburgh Evening Courant 29/8/1829 and the Scotsman 2/9/1829 as I think Alexander's death is announced in those issues, but can't tell for sure from the scrambled text.  Should give a clearer view on which parish he lead.

If it's him in the papers, his Scotland's people death 24/8/1829, would see him buried under a Church of Scotland reference.

Does anybody know if records exist for NC's approx 1820-1840 for Dalkeith, especially during a Reverend Alexander Arthur's leadership?  Thank you.

Scotland / Re: Scottish Prison Registers - How to use them and where to find them

Excellent work there Emma. If any paperwork surfaced for the boys correction ship the Empress, I'd be most interested.  I've a step relative connected to my family who was sentenced as a youth to years on this ship at Govan P.C. Dec 1915.  It was the start of his life long criminal career.

Will keep a close eye on this collection as I've researched Victor extensively and have all his court cases from Kew in London and would love to compare his claims in the book about his 1st conviction against the court case itself.

Hi Andrea, unfortunately I scrolled through that family search link and they don't appear to have the daily internment books, only the plot owners, which would take an age to read through.

This might be his death announcement in the Glasgow Herald 23 Jan 1901, but I can't zoom in any further on my phone to read it more closely.  Looks like you'll need to visit or pay the Mitchell Library to look at the daily internment books.

My try.
Peter

Thank you also for your fine work Peter.  My sister is over the moon.  I'll let you all know my Mums and brothers reactions, unfortunately neither use digital media.  I think they are all stunning.

That's utterly amazing Carol, wish I shared your obvious talent.  Thank you ever so much.  They maybe older now, but they're still beautiful and have been my rocks throughout life.  Thank you again Carol.

Can anybody help with the cracks in this old photo of my siblings from the mid 1960's please?  Many thanks in advance.
