Great News! I have just obtained a copy of the Will of Nicholas Maughan (1800-1878) of Newbrough Hall. In it he says that John Nicholas is his only ("reputed") son and that Jane Simm, his housekeeper, was John Nicholas' mother. I have found John Nicholas Simm in the June quarter of the BMD indices for 1847, which I am sure is the correct person.

Interesting is that, when John Nicholas was just 4 years old, at the time of the 1851 census, Jane Simm was still living at Newbrough Hall as Nicholas' housekeeper, but John Nicholas was not there. I have not been able to find him anywhere on the 1851 census. Perhaps one of you may have more luck?

Best wishes

Richard

Dear All,

Ros has kindly intorduced me to RootsChat, so now I shall be able to join in this interesting chat.

I am very sorry, but I am the one who put in the guesswork about Nicholas "having his way" with a servant. It was just a plausible story that we had made up. Since then we have further research and know that nothing of the sort happened.

However, I am very interested in the additional information coming forth. My wife's mother was Marjory Maughan. Her father was a Nicholas Maughan, but he was brought up by his step-father and was known as Nicholas Geddes for most of his life.

There is a family rumour that his father (another Nicholas Maughan) was the son of the brother of John Nicholas of Newbrough Hall/Lodge. We cannot prove it! It will be exceptionally hard since John Nicholas was born out of wedlock, and so, IF he had a brother, then so was the brother born of a mother not Nicholas' wife.

I am particularly interested in the connection with Whinnetley, which is a farm about 4 miles from Newbrough Hall, because of the window in Newbrough church.

I am also intrigued by the mention of Ridley Hall. Where does that fit in? This is the first time I have heard of it except I once had a very mysterious letter from an address in Ridley Hall asking "Please could you tell me all you know about the Maughans of Newbrough Hall"! This was not followed up, and I never replied.

It is good to be in touch with you all, and I shall be pleased to share whatever I find out.

Best wishes

   Richard
