Galway / Re: Patrick Higgins with a father Michael Higgins
« on: Monday 11 December 06 04:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Dennis

During my own search for family in Tuam, Galway and fruitless I might add! I did collect two baptisms for Higgins that you might like to keep in case they miraculously might later fit in. They are from the R.C. Register.

The baptisms only went up to 1804 and I did not collect any other information that would be relevant to your search as I am only looking for c1790. I did check the marriages to about 1815, nothing there I am afraid, and I was not specifically looking for Higgins.

25 Oct 1803 Michael son of Bernard Higgins and Mary McCormick,
Sponsors: James Mc Cormick and Catherine McCormick

18 Nov 1803 Patt. son of Michael Higgins and Cate Toole
Sponsors: Patt.Toole and Cath. Mann

Miracles do occasionally happen!
Best of luck,
Pat

Dear heywood and luimneach

Than you so much for your advice, the place on the census is definitely Ross Keen, but it is part of the damaged census of 1851, and the names I am looking for are Toole and Dowd, also Ward, Lynch and Rafferty, so Cork sounds a good place to start!

Thank you so much for the advice and I will definitely look at the sites you have suggested.
Kind regards and many thanks again,
Pat :)

Ireland / Ross Keen Ireland

Could anyone please advise me if they have heard of Ross Keen? This is from the 1851 Census.

I have tried the Irish Time placename search etc.

Any advice, or perhaps a phonetic translation of this name, may help me.

Thank you,
Pat

I would appreciate any help in finding Christopher Toole, born  Dec 1882, born Hulme, Manchester, he may have said he was one year younger. BOER War but I am almost certain he survived the war.
Enlisted as a Private possibly the Loyal Irish Regiment?
Any advice would be appreciated,
Thank you

Ireland / Re: Accessing Irish Records
« on: Tuesday 14 November 06 04:44 GMT (UK)  »
I went to the LDS Centre today and asked for some clarification of what I was told earlier.

Second time around it had changed to pretty much the same as described above but that it will include all filmed records. A huge job and will take many years to complete because of the millions of records involved.

I was told that it will be searched by Country, By County, by Parish etc, and the viewing will be direct from the films, frame by frame, pretty much like a census can be viewed. Work has already begun. He was unsure if names would be indexed first so that you can search only the pages that contain your ancestors names.

That is all for now, but I am sure even when only partially completed any help to Irish researchers will be a great improvement to what we have now.

With that I will end my news, and hope it will not be too long before we have something more definitive from the LDS that will give us some hope?

Regards,
Pat

I have not yet been able to get to the LDS centre as It is a considerable distance from my home, however there does appear to be some movement in th LDS lab. regarding new technology.
Although it does not specifically refer to Irish Records, I just thought I would post this in case anyone is interested in looking at a sample pedigree or entering their own, it is just at the experimental stage yet. I found this on Legacy news. If you have not got the Adobe Flash this can be downloaded.

Super Duper Zim Zam Zoom Pedigree Viewer
If you want a preview of some of genealogy technology's future, take a look at FamilySearch (TM) Labs' new Pedigree Viewer. Using Flash technology, you can view your own pedigree or simply view their sample.

Dan Lawyer, Product Manager in the Family History Department of the LDS Church said, "we know there is a long way to go to really make this viewer a useable tool but we hope that you'll have fun experimenting with it and share your thoughts on how we can improve it by sending feedback to feedback@familysearchlabs.org. We'd love to hear from you!

Armed Forces / Re: Advice Please

Dear Mac

His full name was Thomas William Ingham, born Hulme and spent almost all his life in the Manchester region. He was a very good driver, and motor cyclist, but worked most of his life in clerical type positions, but did also drive.
He had plates in both wrists, and I can recall seeing these. I had his name checked in a book index written about the young men in the RFC without result.

Thank you Mac,
Pat

Dear Wendi
I did not download the images because his first names did not match. There were no Thomas William's, and the only ones I could find were two Thomas's in the Manchester Regiment and one Tom on the Accrington Absent voters list, but I do not think this one is him, even though he was the only one in the RAF.
Thank you both very much for replying,
Pat

Armed Forces / Advice Please
« on: Monday 02 October 06 01:28 BST (UK)  »
I have read most of the posts and replies in this forum and I am grateful for the help they have given me so far.

I have my ancestors birth date. and place of birth and he survived the war. In 1915 he would have been old enough to enlist he was born in 1896, that he was in the air force, and came down and broke both his wrists. I thought perhaps he had transferred from the army, say the Manchester Regiment, especially when I saw one on this forum had done this and then gone back later to this Regiment. I have checked the Medal Rolls, there are three with his name, but the Roll does not actually identify if several are of the same name, the information is limited. He is not on the Manchester Roll of Honour on the Spinning the Web site. Other than his wrists he was healthy, but I cannot recall any mention of active service except this.

Could someone advise me please what I can do next, I cannot visit the archives and the last time I looked at asking a researcher to check his service record, the fees mentioned were more than I could afford.

Any advice would be really appreciated,
Thank you,
 Pat

Unwanted Certificates & Artefacts / Re: Baptismal Records
« on: Friday 29 September 06 00:15 BST (UK)  »
Dear Anne

Having fallen foul of the copyright conditions on this forum, it is not something I would like to do again however innocently.

The medal cards are really another trap I think. But I take the view that you have paid out good money for these on the slimmest of evidence provided in the initial look ups by the National Archives, unless your soldier has an unusual name and you know his regimental number it is a guessing game to pick the right one, and frequently leaves you with expensive information that could be useful to someone else.

I do not know the answer, perhaps you could seek advice on this one before you post the names?
Not sure about baptisms/marriages,burial records either as often these are obtained at great expense via a researcher. Does a Church own the copyright or the diocese of the parish? And, what of those lucky people that live close to archived documents, like parish registers, they must amass massive amounts of information during there own searches, that is of no use to them, but very useful to other people when broken down into individual names.

So sorry I cannot help you really but it is good to hear from you.

Kind regards,
 Pat
