Thank you, Guy and Mabel, for your very informative replies, giving me a much more rounded understanding of illegitimacy and practices.

Scotland / Re: Will/confirmation for Levi Monk who died 1928
« on: Tuesday 26 November 19 11:12 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all for your interest and replies, which have added to my knowledge.  It is a blow that will/confirmations are only available online up to 1925.  If I remember correctly, his wife's nephew was the informant on Levi's death certificate.  There may be no mention of his Australian relatives, which is where my interest lies.  Thank you again.

Thank you for your interest and information.  Gazania

Thank you, Sandra.  FamilySearch is always my first port of call these days as they have so many new records.  But so far I have drawn a blank as the Mass death indexes stop well before 1927.  So I am hoping for some local knowledge. Gazania

Thank you, Gadget

I shall read the order more closely and try to make sense of the wording.

My apologies for my tardy reply - had a few days visiting with my son.  Gazania

Mike, I shall PM you later, with a brief summary.  Thank you, especially with notion to see if the contact person is still active.  Gazania

Hi Jade,

I see where two very kind rootschatters have already provided very helpful information.

I am afraid I am unable to add anymore as I was researching OH's Blincow family and not the Jacobs family. If I uncover anymore information, I shall post it on this site. Your assignment topic sounds so very interesting and I wish you well. Gazania

Armed Forces / Re: Invalided out of Navy - "Penelope"
« on: Thursday 26 April 18 00:32 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for your informative reply.

The naval record gives no indication of where or why he was discharged. A difficult to read comment in the remark column next to being invalided out is "Traced (or) Faced P. 11 Oct 1882"

I was also thinking he may have been sent home before the 6 August 1882 on leave after the bombardment of Alexandria 13 Jul 1882.

Anyway, the large scattered family had regrouped and had migrated to Oz in stages in 1884.  As a  lot had happened to the family between 1880 -1884, I have been looking for reasons for their migration.  Sadly, this rellie was found drowned in the Brisbane River in 1890 aged 26.

Thank you again, Gazania

Thank you both for the information.  I shall look at my ancestors' records more closely.  May find more insights.  Gazania
