This probably doesn't help, but some years ago I considered whether the Lakin alias Townsend family could be connected with my Townsend problem.
Briefly, I want to discover the origins of my ancestor, Erasmus Townsend, a basket maker who married at Lenton, Nottinghamshire in 1638. Since a potential father, another Erasmus Townsend, was buried at Buckminster, Leicestershire in 1640, I searched quite a lot in Leicestershire records,
including the Bishop's Transcripts. In the course of that, I came across a George and a Thomas (I think) Lakin alias Townsend, and others, but I found no connection with any Erasmus.
This was all pre-1650, so it is probably too early for your problem, but if you had any specific queries as far back as that, I could dig out my old search notes.
