I would like to find out more about the 12th Battalion of this Regiment during WW1. I have found a relative, Arthur George (No: 44618), buried in Rouen and now wish to establish what the Batalion's role was. I know they joined the 152nd and 153rd Labour Corps and that Artur died in February 1917.

Where would I start looking?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I could not find an Edward, living in Wigmore, in the Censuses, who also has a father called Thomas. I know Sarah had at least 4 illegitimate sons Thomas, Edwin, John and Edward. I have birth certificates for Thomas (whose father was Thomas Powell) and John (whose father was not named). Coincidentally, Sarah's father's name was Thomas.

You are right, at this point in time, I am still not convinced that I have the correct Edward!

Thank you for your continued help!

Two of the birth certificates do not show Sarah as the mother, so I have now applied for the last one: Ludlow Mar 1839 Vol 18 Pg67.  I hadn't gone for this before because of the date.

Sarah has always lived in Wigmore and is actually buried there. I have found Edward and Sarah together on the 1841 Census. Edward was a visitor with the Powell family (in Wigmore) in the 1851 Census, although his age is shown as 15!!

I could not find him in the 1861 Census although he is back with Sarah, in Wigmore, in the 1871 Census.

I have found 3 births: Ludlow  Mar 1839 Vol 18 Pg 67; Knighton Jun 1840 Vol 26 Pg 239 and Ludlow Mar 1841 Vol 18 pg 73.

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Edward George

I have unsuccessfully tried to find a Birth certificate for Edward George born in Wigmore. I have a marriage certificate dated May 1875 when he married Ellen Bruton and his father is shown as Thomas George (deceased).

There has been no problem tracing this couple in the 1881, 1891 or 1901 Census returns which put his date of birth anywhere between 1841 and 1842.

The only Edward I have found to be born in Wigmore, at that time, is the one born to an unmarried mother named Sarah, whose father's name happens to be Thomas George! I also know from Baptism records that Sarah had at least 4 sons and that Edward was baptized in 1840. The year does not quite tie in with that given on the Census records.

Could anyone please help me throw some light on this???

Thanks,
Karl

Over the last months I have continued "digging" on and off and have established that Sarah George had at least 4 sons (John, Thomas, Edwin and Edward).

I have birth certificates for Thomas and John (May 1838 & Oct 1849 respectively). In Thomas' case, Thomas Powell is shown as the father whereas John has a blank.

I am actually interested in Edward George who married Ellen Bruton in May 1875 and am trying to find his parents. Unfortunately I was unable to find a birth certificate, but found a Marriage certificate which showed Thomas George (deceased) as the father. Could I be smelling a rat? Could this have been Thomas Powell?

What do you think?
