Have just discovered that hubby's GGreat Aunt had 6 or 7 illegitimate children...Hmmm.

I have now heard from another researcher that in fact Susannah was a "Lady of the Night"

Yikes....Hubby's mother would be rolling in her grave....so..

Don't say anything...OK?

Had to laugh, the secrets that come out, my great aunt told me my great grandmother's eternal boast was that it never took less than 2 coppers to get her into a cell, even in her 70's  :-[ :-[

Hi Carol,

Thanks for this, I will definitely explore this one a bit more because on family search I found a James Richardson in Dukinfield so this could be where they met if they both grew up there.

thanks again

Hi Pauline,

I'm not a member of Ancestry anymore, the ones I'm stuck on it was no help for.

James's occupation was given as general labourer i've just had another go on fbmd but no luck so think will have to wait until 1910 census comes out for more info.

thanks for trying

I stopped counting, but what amazes me is that there was ever so much stigma attached to being illegitimate, almost every family I've come across had illegitimate offspring in it somewhere.

I could actually slap my gr. grandmother for all the time and expense she has cost us in tracing the tree.

My mother  thought her great aunt was her grandmother and that her father only had a brother and a sister, all illegitimate.

It turns out that gt. grandmother's husband cleared off to the U.S. and forgot to send for her and the 5 kids so she appears to have given them away, moved in with some man (unknown) and had my grandfather at age 42.

Her oldest daughter, who my mum thought was her gran helped raise him, as did his half brother and another half sister.

We traced this branch of the "family" all the way back to Ireland in the late 18th century only to find out that grandfather was Ann's illegitimate son and not her daughter's child which meant, of course, that grandfather was a Gibbons by name only and all the research had been a waste of time.

I suppose Ann had been able to  give him the Gibbons name as it was her legal name but it has been very confusing.

Hi Pauline,

Sorry it's taken a while to get back to you, I came down with the dreaded flu type bug that is doing the rounds :(

Stanley Richardson was born on 29th December 1904, the address given on birth certificate is 37 Lunt Hill Macclesfield.  His parents are given as James  and Elizabeth Richardson (nee Cottrell).

As I said, I can't find his parents anywhere, there is a James Richardson born London on the 1901 census and for a while I thought that must be the one by default but the information does not fit what I have been told about the rest of the family.

Many thanks

Sheila

Have you find him on the census before his marriage.
I ask because on the 1881 there is a Thomas Brocklehurst, married and from Macclesfield in prison.  The age is a few years out - but I wonder if it might be worth investigating?
You might have looked at this one, but if you want the ref. let me know

Just found this one via ancestry.

Don't think it is my Thomas Brocklehurst (thank goodness :) ) six years older and a weaver.  The one I am looking for was a fireman.

thanks for help

I'd start by looking at the 1901 census for a James Richardson occupation: ?. That may indicate where in the list of kids Stanley appears, (and therefore when/where a marriage moke likely took place)

You could also search on the 1905 address at the GR 1901 site.

Pauline

can't find him on the 1901 census :(

No, I've not found him anywhere, if you could send the ref. would definitley like to take a look.
