Hi NettyBetty,

Welcome and guess you and I are cousins .... remote but family none the less as TY Cotter is my GGG grandfather too.

I can fill you in on his live and times in South Aust if you want. I have information that Bryan sent me a while back on the irish side and is all good information.

I would like to know your lineage too please so I can update my tree.  If you send me message I will give you my email address ..... but I will be abck at sea this weekend and may not have internet coverage until we get back to Australia, ... new ship and no idea of what comms gear we have.  Bryan is probably laughing

Enjoy the adventure and he was certainly an interesting man and very important part of SA's history

Good evening lancsann,

Ok, please more information ..... please as this has me intrigued and may close gaps as age is close to right. Location ??

As far as I know he ended up in a Bluecoat school .... but anything else is vague at best.

The lawyer being in same street cannot be co-incidence.

Thank you very much for your help

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Lost Cousins newsletter

First, thank for the link etc to Lost Cousins.

Interesting and never know it may help me open doors to areas I cant find.

As for Ancestry, I agree in locking trees .... I am happy to share relevant details but to give open access is, I think, a recipe for disaster.

Thanks and lets see where this journey takes us.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry matches don't reply to me....

Interesting conversation,

My partner and I did ours together (me an aussie and her a Latin American) .... more out of curiousity and to find if there was thread of truth to respective grandmother's stories.

I have emailed a couple of people listed as cousins (of whatever removal) and have some reply, some not. The ones who have, have been fantastic to talk to and have broadened my family or filled in some gaps.

Those who haven't, is it my loss or theirs ??  not sure but out of my control. Overall absolutely no regrets doing it, even tho rest of family sceptical.

Anyway, my "two bobs worth"

Good evening and back to the hunt for James Bennett GIBBS

I have found that a James Gibbs was apprenticed to the "Bengal" and then a James Gibbs left the Bengal in Port Adelaide, South Australia, 4 years later.

Not a believer in co-incidences it would appear that he joined as a apprentice to the Bengal and left on completion, that being on arrival to SA.

I now have 2 issues, who signed him to his apprencticeship (that may guide me backwards there) , second being where was he and what was he doing in SA up to when he married

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi Bryan,

Thanks for the additional information and tonight sat and re-read it all ...... very interesting and pieces a few more bits of family together, thank you

I am going to copy it into "word" and then can read it thro and update my tree.

I have some of the family once Thomas Y. arrived in SA, .... his was a life of trials and tribulations, depending on which side of the politics he was on at the time. Very influential in SA medical history and the state in general.

How he ended up in Pt Augusta was always interesting but the family from there is a mystery too

When you have completed the history I would love to be able to read it please,

I am currently at sea (seems to run in the family) so internet coverage at times can be "hit and miss" but will reply .

Thanks again for the information

Hi Bryan,

No, not wife (have not had one of those for many years), me.

My gggrandmother was Ellen Fisher Cotter and I was of the understanding that his family would have travelled with him when Thomas Young ..... arrived in SA as he was Surgeon Lt to the Governor of the new state of South Aust.

Logically I guess, family would have arrived later, navy vessels and protocols. I am not sure but will have look in state archives.

My issue and problems lie as much with Ellen Fisher Cotter's husband of which there are huge gaps in his story ..... another thread cover my questions there.

Thanks for the info

Good morning Martin,

I tried to send you an email regarding this medal/medallion you have that was Thomas Y Cotter's.

I would be interested in seeing it please, I am a direct descendant of TY Cotter and his daughter is my GG grandmother.

Not sure where you are located (I am in Adelaide) but please drop me a email and I would like to meet, maybe photograph the medal for my own family research.

Thank you

David
